I believe empowerment is one single most important aspects a tutor can bring to a student's live. I have oftentimes seen students who are lost and have almost given up on their desire to learn a new topic. In these situations, it is crucial to approach such students with a massive smile on your face and listen to their issues and expectations in…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do are to foster independent thinking and create a safe space for questions. A tutor should not only improve grades but also equip them with skills and strategies they can apply beyond the tutoring sessions. One of my key strengths is patience. I take time yo explain concepts clearly and in different…

The most important thing a tutor can do is spark curiosity—once a student is curious, learning becomes easier and more enjoyable. My role is to guide, support, and give them the confidence to keep exploring. My strengths are patience, breaking things into simple steps, and making students feel comfortable asking questions. I also grasp math…

The most important thing a tutor can do is build confidence as well as knowledge. When students believe in themselves, they naturally try harder and keep improving. I focus on making learning simple and less intimidating, encouraging curiosity and problem-solving instead of just memorisation, and being supportive so that students know someone…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not just teach them their lessons - but also teach them better study habits. This will ensure that the students may learn to study on their own without the help of a tutor all the time, and that they may be able to grow as an individual prepared for bigger challenges (such as uni,…

A tutor should always understand the level of understanding of a particular subject by a student, so that he/she can start teaching from the basics if necessary. I am people-friendly. Tutoring commenced as planned in Week 1 of Term 4. I was satisfied with the tutor after interviewing her - I have considerable relevant experience, as a sometime academic & subsequently a senior official, then the principal of a boutique consulting business. More importantly, my Year 9 Selective daughter learnt very quickly from the tutor, whom she respects & likes, coming to understand Trigonometry at last in the first hourly session. After just four of these she is on her way back to where she should be in Maths. In primary school she always came 2nd in her year to a Mathematics genius. In high school she has been held back by personal issues & poor teaching, with only her Year 8 teacher being of any quality. It is wonderful to see her enjoying her Maths again. I look forward o reading her report in a few weeks.

Inside Dulwich HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Liam focused on addition and subtraction, using number lines and equality statements to strengthen basic arithmetic.

In Year 10, Emily worked through algebraic skills like adding like terms and solving equations involving addition, subtraction, and division.

For Year 11, Jack concentrated on vectors—covering vector addition, subtraction, and constructing diagrams to support understanding of proofs.

Recent Challenges

Homework was often incomplete, limiting their chance to consolidate algebra and coordinate geometry skills outside class.

In Year 11 mathematics, messy working—such as omitting equal signs or cramming steps—made it harder to spot where sign errors occurred; one tutor remarked, "writing numbers neatly and keeping numerators and denominators together would help."

A Year 4 student sometimes avoided starting subtraction tasks if they seemed too hard, guessing instead of writing out attempts.

After setbacks in senior physics, a student lost motivation and hesitated to use feedback or textbook worked examples for revision.

Recent Achievements

A Dulwich Hill tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who used to skip steps in algebra is now writing out all workings and diagrams neatly, which has led to fewer errors.

In Year 11 maths, Annabelle previously struggled to choose the right trigonometric function but now reliably identifies when to use sin, cos, or tan without prompting.

Meanwhile, during a primary session, Zoe—who often lost focus—settled in after some encouragement and completed her questions independently for the first time this term.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Emanuel Tsardoulias Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design.
