Learning can be fun although it is challenging. To be effective in tutoring, I need to determine first the weaknesses and strengths in learning of my student. My teaching approach should match his/her learning…

Providing individualised resources, feedback and guidance a student needs to learn and thereby developing the necessary skills to resolve problems by themselves (important in tests and examinations). I also think it would be enjoyable to analyse and plan accordingly to each students performance to maximise their learning. I believe I am…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to provide the student with the tools to study and pass their assessments. The main goal for any tutor should be to help get the student to the point at which they no longer require a tutor. I am able to explain information in more than one way, and adapt my teaching methods to suit the…

Listen to them to develop an understanding of the areas they may struggle with or are looking for extra support in. I think also being creative in my approach when required so that the student gets the most out of the sessions and helps them to develop a better understanding. As a result, I think it is important to understand how the student…

The most important things a tutor can do are to show the students the ropes, and help them when needed but not do it all for them. The role of a tutor is ultimately to support and aid the student's learning journey, not to dominate it, which would lead to the student not being able to actually learn anything. My strengths as a tutor lie in my…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is adapt to the student and their learning needs. Every student is different and there is a need to connect with the student so they get the most out of their learning. Im very patient with the people that I tutor, and my understanding of topics allows me to teach people in a way they…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to have a brilliant understanding of student's learning pace and basic knowledge so that the tutor can easily change teaching methods whenever required. Additional to this it is also important for a tutor to make the concepts interesting, be disciplined, punctual as well excellent communication skills for…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are make learning feel less stressful, build a student’s confidence, and adapt to their needs. It’s not just about explaining concepts, it’s about creating a space where they feel comfortable asking questions without fear of judgment. Everyone learns differently, so I try to adjust my…

Inside East GeelongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Eliz revised subtraction and decimals, practised arithmetic problems, and was introduced to Roman numerals using practical examples.

For Year 8, Ava tackled Pythagoras' Theorem with visual aids and worked on unit conversions relevant to geometry topics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sam focused on calculus skills—differentiating functions using the chain rule and quotient rule—and applied these techniques to exam-style tangent questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student was repeatedly forgetting to bring her books and calculator home, making it difficult to review progress or check homework completion. As a tutor noted, "she tends to forget to bring her school books but always has an alternative task prepared," which disrupted the session's flow and limited targeted support.

In a senior Maths lesson, another student relied too heavily on mental calculations during Pythagoras' Theorem practice; missing calculator use led to avoidable errors.

For one Year 12 learner, skipping double-checks in exam questions resulted in minor mistakes going unnoticed—extra time was then spent searching for what went wrong instead of moving forward.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in East Geelong recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with tough maths problems; she now jumps into challenging questions and usually completes them with hardly any guidance.

Another high school student was excited to tell her tutor about scoring well on her Pythagoras test after working through tricky algebra together—she needed very little help this time, which was a first.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who often waited for prompts has started describing pictures in English lessons without being asked, showing real independence by choosing her own words each session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newcomb Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Margaret's School.
