In my opinion, a maths tutor should be able to to discern what motivates a particular student, easily identify a student's weaknesses and quickly build confidence in these areas through targeted practice. A good tutor establishes specific goals and ensures any tools or methods necessary for improvement are clear and available for the student to…

One of the most crucial goals is to empower students to become independent learners. This involves creating a supportive, judgment-free space where they feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. By guiding them through problem-solving strategies rather than just giving them the solution, a maths tutor helps build the student's…

The primary role, I believe, for a teacher is to guide students to the right direction. With all the progress in information technology, educational content is readily available for literally anyone willing to learn something. The key role, for a modern-day teacher, I feel is to help students understand what they might be looking for and how they…

A skilled teacher may rekindle students' enthusiasm for learning by teaching in an engaging and practical manner. A tutor can lay a solid foundation for future courses by clearing the fundamentals of any subject. A good teacher can identify the student's weakest links and work with them to overcome them in a friendly manner. Teaching is a kind of…

Building confidence in a students ability. Sometimes the only thing preventing students from excelling is doubt in their knowledge. Yes, nobody wants to ask 'silly' questions in the classroom when all your friends are there, but as a maths tutor it is important to not only help in understanding concepts in theory; but also instill adequate…

I have always been an extremely patient person which shines through when tutoring. I am also able to think of other ways to explain a concept or…

One of the foremost things a maths tutor can do for a student is to develop their interest in something which they have disliked or taken for granted. listening to students and finding out what they want out of the sessions and how they prefer to learn. By doing so we can offer a method of learning that's customized to them as an individual and not as a class. Learning occurs in many formats and a maths tutor should provide a format that isn't inherently applied in schools - aiding in the…

I believe, more than anything else, that a maths tutoring space should feel judgement free for a student. A student should not feel hesitant to ask questions or to clarify a concept. In fact, I believe it to be a good sign if a student is able to outright say that my explanation is not what they need or understand. Fostering such a safe and…

Inside East GeelongTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Eliz revised subtraction and decimals, practised arithmetic problems, and was introduced to Roman numerals using practical examples.

For Year 8, Ava tackled Pythagoras' Theorem with visual aids and worked on unit conversions relevant to geometry topics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sam focused on calculus skills—differentiating functions using the chain rule and quotient rule—and applied these techniques to exam-style tangent questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student was repeatedly forgetting to bring her books and calculator home, making it difficult to review progress or check homework completion. As a tutor noted, "she tends to forget to bring her school books but always has an alternative task prepared," which disrupted the session's flow and limited targeted support.

In a senior Maths lesson, another student relied too heavily on mental calculations during Pythagoras' Theorem practice; missing calculator use led to avoidable errors.

For one Year 12 learner, skipping double-checks in exam questions resulted in minor mistakes going unnoticed—extra time was then spent searching for what went wrong instead of moving forward.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in East Geelong recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to hesitate with tough maths problems; she now jumps into challenging questions and usually completes them with hardly any guidance.

Another high school student was excited to tell her tutor about scoring well on her Pythagoras test after working through tricky algebra together—she needed very little help this time, which was a first.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who often waited for prompts has started describing pictures in English lessons without being asked, showing real independence by choosing her own words each session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newcomb Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Margaret's School.
