A step by step technique. It is important that the student is shown the correct way to solve a problem as the student might not have understood the basics of the lesson. When teaching the student, it is important to go through the lesson and make sure the student understands the lesson before commencing with the assignment. It is out job to…

I think it is most important for a tutor to make the learning experience enjoyable for a student, because in my experience even the worst subject with the most innane course material can be made much better with a tutor that you actually like, that likes the subject, and presents it clearly. I know I am good at interacting with my students,…

a tutor must strive to find what a student lack and try to complement it. For example , a slacking student , in most cases, might be just lacking vision for his future. A tutor must guide him towards setting targets for himself. I am able to identify learning styles of…

Being a source of advice and support in a student's scholarly journey. I am approachable and non-judgemental so students can ask me for help on school topics that they may not want to ask their teachers or parents due to anxiety. I use learning styles that complement the student I am teaching, as opposed to a "one size fits all"…

- Being open and being a conversationalist has to be the most important priority to ensure that the student feels comfortable enough to ask questions. You cannot learn a concept unless you actively engage and ask questions! - Being well prepared for a class and I believe this not only involves knowing the content thoroughly enough to teach BUT…

A tutor can be many things for a student. Not only can they be an avenue where they can learn in a different way which may be the student's way of learning, but also they can be a mentor for them in that they can give different insights and views, as well as being someone who listen, and if wanted, suggestions and advice. I can explain concepts…

I believe the most important aspects of being a tutor for a student is the support tutors can provide. Tutors must improve a students confidence academically by improving study skills, encourage understanding of content and focus on anything the student may be struggling with. Tutors should also assist students socially by developing strong…

I believe that a tutor can serve as a source of inspiration, not only by exemplifying excellence in their subject area but also by demonstrating key qualities such as determination and resilience throughout their academic journey. Most importantly, a tutor is someone whom students can look up to for guidance and support, capable of effectively…

Try to help them gain a good, comprehensive understanding of concepts that they don't quite understand as at school, the teacher does not have time to individually help out every student. I think a tutor can not only help a student academically, but also help them unlock their true selves. I believe a tutor should be understanding, patient, passionate, and encouraging. I had a tutor for my HSC and I believe that to gain a strong connection with the student, you must be their biggest cheerleader. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach the student how to approach problems and questions on their own, such that they are not dependent on anyone when they encounter a difficult problem in the future. For example, to teach them how to look at a problem in many different ways, to reverse the problem and work…

A tutor should provide guidance and assistance at all costs for the student they are teaching. It is the tutors responsibility to do the best they can in order to help the student reach their potential. It is crucial for the tutors to maintain patient and positive. Especially in one-on-one situations, new students may feel constantly pressured to succeed. Inside East KillaraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Alice focused on financial maths and applying Pythagoras' theorem, referencing the Cambridge textbook and EUKA resources.

Year 10 student James revised algebraic techniques with indices and worked through polynomial graphing, also reviewing exponential growth and decay using practice questions.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student tackled definite integrals—working through areas under curves—and practiced volumes of revolution using cylindrical shells and disc methods to prepare for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, one student often avoided showing full working in algebra and geometry tasks—"he should elaborate a bit more on the working outs," as noted—leading to missed marks when mental steps went unrecorded.

In senior mathematics (Year 12), there was a tendency to rely heavily on notes for new topics like chain rule or integration, which slowed problem-solving and limited retention: "Requires looking at notes for now."

Across multiple grades, late arrivals and forgotten content were common, resulting in time spent catching up rather than practicing challenging applications.

When feedback was offered after complex calculus errors, corrections weren't always consistently applied in subsequent sessions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in East Killara noticed that one high school student, who previously hesitated with multi-step trigonometry questions, now confidently connects triangle sides to trig rules and solves problems without prompting.

Another senior student, after struggling with z-scores, recently tackled standard normal curve table questions on their own and quickly applied formulas for annuities and loan repayments.

In a Year 5 session, a student who used to guess when faced with fraction multiplication now pauses to convert percentages to decimals first and explains each step aloud before answering.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ku-ring-gai Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Killara High School.
