Bring them a new way to approach problems, and help them overcome the fear of giving wrong answers or asking what they might consider "dumb questions," because there are no such things as dumb questions. My strengths as a tutor are that I make sure that my students understand the subject, and then we do practical exercises. Once they grasp the…

As the old Navajo proverb goes, you satiate a person's hunger by giving them fish, they go hungry again in an hour, you teach them how to fish, you feed them for a lifetime. That's precisely what I'd like to do to my students. Allow them to explore the different possibilities, the world presents to them in order to hone their individuality and…

I think the most important is to be supportive, from experience the reason that most people struggle with learning is because they give up or don’t think they can. Hence encouragement is key and positive re-enforcement. I also believe that making the student comfortable around you and going through source material in an efficient manner can make…

Every student has different expectations from a tutor and thus the most important thing might vary from student to student. Some of them might just be looking for a pass in the subject whereas others might be looking for really good grades. For some grades wont even matter and they strive for understanding the subject thoroughly. I believe the…

The two most important things would be to clear the basics of the subject and to keep the student interested in it. Most of the students develop phobia of maths or stop being interested in the subject because they do not understand the basics. This in turn, leads them to not focus on the subject even if they are capable of doing good in it or they…

A tutor must make themselves approachable and be a role model figure to their students. As someone they have a more personalized time space with compared to their school teachers, the students are often likely to look up to their tutors as figures of inspiration and personal ceilings. I believe striking a balance in how the tutor interacts with a student is key. Being able to listen and identify a student's problem areas, as well as being firm enough to hold their attention is vital. A good tutor can set expectations tailored to a student's abilities and with them raise them while boosting their confidence. Overall personality…

It would be empathy, in my opinion. I am aware that there are intelligent people who are easily able to surpass me in knowledge, but I believe that to effectively teach and learn, one must have a sufficient level of empathy. For me, the most important thing is to always ask questions if there are any unclear parts of the lesson. Also, mastery is always important so practice is the key, esp. for Math. Inside East MelbourneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Alex practised **perimeter and area calculations for rectangles using visual diagrams**, and began exploring volume concepts.

In Year 8, Sophie focused on **solving equations and inequalities**, including a review of quadratic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student James worked through physics motion questions involving **velocity, displacement, and time calculations**, alongside targeted chemistry exam question reviews to strengthen his understanding of key concepts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for Units 1 and 2 exam questions struggled with calculations, especially when pressured for time—she missed marks on multi-step problems because units weren't clearly written, noted one tutor.

In Year 8 algebra, skipping the step of flipping inequality signs when multiplying by negatives led to repeated errors that practice alone didn't fix.

A Year 4 student's working was often hard to follow due to inconsistent layout; this made checking answers difficult, especially with area versus perimeter tasks.

For a senior Physics student, not responding fully to feedback meant velocity calculations stayed shaky into the next lesson.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in East Melbourne noticed a big change for one Year 9 student who used to get stuck on fraction problems—she now works through addition, subtraction, and even multiplying fractions with much less hesitation and remembers the steps from week to week.

In a senior session, another student showed initiative by completing several practice exams independently and reported feeling more prepared than before for upcoming assessments.

Meanwhile, a younger student who was previously reluctant to speak up has started asking questions whenever she's unsure about how area and volume differ, instead of quietly guessing.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Dion is actually excited about Maths again and told me the other day I really like Maths now, after spending the majority of this year hating it and feeling down on himself because he just couldn't understand some of the strands and considered himself to be really bad at it, even though his results in NAPLAN and school reports did not reflect this, it was just that he had lost all confidence. So we are so excited for him, that he's gained that confidence back and he thoroughly looks forward to Nav coming every week. So just after 2 weeks, I want to say how beyond happy we all are with Nav and Ezy Math as an entire organisation. Your correspondence has been very thorough and extremely helpful with lots of great tips and explanations. You've managed to turn this Maths learning experience from a negative one to a positive in just a couple of weeks. We can't wait to see what great success Dion can achieve with the help of Nav.

Gracie, she has been very accommodating and has had the patience to work with my son. Even though I have not met her in person, she seems to be very dedicated.

Skye's mum has mentioned she is really happy with Christine, so please pass this on to Christine.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as East Melbourne Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Richmond West Primary School.
