I consider the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach the student to understand the concept themself and thus making them much more self-reliant. The tutor can help the student understand not only the concepts but also why its significant and their practical application so that they have a sense of why they are learning these. I can…

My teachers have been my second parents. Few of my school teachers are still in touch with me and we are like a family now. Throughout my education, I realised the importance of a good tutor. The reason why I loved few subjects and why I hated the few. Its practically the attitude of tutors and how they present their subject that makes a subject…

Firstly a tutor must be able to provide clear and concise explanations of concepts and have a solid understanding of the subject matter. Secondly, tutors need to be able to use a personalized approach of teaching for different students to better help match and pace the student's learning style, speed, strengths and weaknesses e.g. Effective…

I strongly believe that two things are the most important in a tutor: perspective and engagement. Perspective due to how different minds work at understanding, and how no approach fits all students. Engagement to engage their problem solving skills, to ensure that the key is understanding and refrain from relying on memory. As I find the…

Make sure that the student is comfortable to express their exact approach and unknowns on a topic. The more time you can spend on the exact areas of struggle the greater the improvement. The ability to see knowledge from a deeper level and be able to present it from many angles. This has been appreciated by the students I tutored in high school.…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to pique their interest in the subject and let their curiosity take over, so they wish to learn more about it on their own and not think of learning as work. I communicate effectively and am very patient with the students. I believe in helping them achieve a solid foundation of…

Always go back to the basics, as many students hold themselves to ask questions they think of as "irrelevant" or "common sense", when in reality it's those questions the one's building real knowledge and solid foundations. That's why as a tutor the most important thing I can do is go beyond what they ask me or what their classes teach, as some…

Local Reviews

Joy is fantastic. Though we only started with Joy in the last term, her work with Mina has made a significant difference to her over all marks. She makes effective use of the time when tutoring, Her explanations are clear, and she checks back to make sure the information is understood. This has really helped Mina's understanding of her maths work. We look forward to the "Joy" effect on next years work.

Inside East PerthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Emily worked through her recent school assignment on area, perimeter, and fractions, carefully reviewing each solution for accuracy.

In Year 8, Samuel focused on highest common factor (HCF), lowest common multiple (LCM), and decimal numbers by revisiting his test questions and tackling a custom worksheet for extra practice.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Mark started the basics of trigonometry with SOHCAHTOA for right-angled triangles, applying these rules to solve introductory problems.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student hesitated to attempt new algebra problems, saying "I just can't do this," and would stop before trying alternative approaches.

In a Year 6 maths lesson, another student guessed answers by spotting patterns instead of writing out working, leading to repeated errors in division tasks.

One Year 11 student spent excessive time re-reading test questions—"he wastes the majority of his time reading the question over and over again"—which left less time for actual problem-solving.

Across both primary and senior levels, students' confidence often dropped sharply after setbacks, causing them to lose focus or avoid asking for help when confused.

Recent Achievements

One East Perth tutor noticed that a Year 10 student, who used to hesitate before tests, recently scored 27 out of 30 and now actively asks for new challenges rather than waiting for guidance.

A Year 8 student previously reluctant to admit when stuck has begun voicing specific questions in sessions, allowing her to clarify tricky algebra steps right away instead of guessing.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who would rush through multiplication tables is now pausing to check her work and showing real excitement when she spots patterns—she finished her last worksheet with zero errors.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Joshua feels comfortable with Linh so far, which is fantastic. His teaching skills are impressive! Very happy so far...

Eddy is really happy with Amy! I am so pleased to advise he has quickly built a rapport with her and has been really positive following their tutoring sessions.

My son and myself are greatly satisfied with the work that Jacqualine is putting forth to my son Tyler, he looks forward to every session. Jacqueline is professional, explains the following subjects until my son grasps on but also makes learning enjoyable. Not only myself by Tyler's teacher has seen an improvement with his confidence when completing a math's task at school. I believe we are in the process of having Tyler's teacher also liaise with Jacqueline to make this process a easier transition.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Perth Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like SEDA College WA (East Perth).
