The most important goal for a tutor is to spark students' interest in the subject. Tutoring is not only about assisting with a student's grade. I do believe, though, that every student should find out what they are enthusiastic about. Due to my dual language proficiency in English and Chinese as an international student, I have experience…

A tutor needs to always be supportive. A student needs a tutor because (s)he wants help. Sometimes not getting a good result can be frustrating for them. A tutor needs to make sure that the students are motivated to improve. I'm good at understanding why the students are stuck, whether it is not knowing how to apply a formula or weak algebraic…

Tutors are expected to bolster student grades however this is not their true purpose, A tutor should help to develop students to not only achieve greater marks but also to have a greater understanding of the field they are being tutored in. This should extend beyond the tutoring time as the student develops the skills required to support…

Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

Tutors should check for understanding as they go and constantly build confidence so that the student feels like their abilities are improving. When a student feels confident, wonderful things begin to happen. Their curiosity is ignited, and they are more likely to ask questions in class and read additional texts about things that interest them.…

Understand them and their learning habits. If a tutor does not understand their student, they can never excel at tutoring that student or almost anyone. Helping a student grow and evolve. A student can be thought of as a growing plant. They need the correct amount of sunlight and water to grow. Similarly students need the right amount of help if…

I believe that it is important for tutors to be passionate about teaching. This way, it is easier for the student to gain interest in the subject, which ultimately leads to better performance from the student as they are more motivated to study and learn. I also think that it is important for tutors to create a comfortable learning environment for…

Being able to teach a student enough material for them to be able to pass the class, that is what you are being paid to do. Build interest. For younger student, most of them are still trying to find their interest in a certain field. The best thing I can do is to build interest with my humorous skill. Interest can lead students to an automatic learning mode, they will intake the related knowledge and digest them by themselves, and have the ability to do self-study,…

I believe the important thing a tutor can do for a student is to show patience and determination to increase the confidence and self-esteem of the child. The best thing a tutor can do to a student is to make the subject more interesting so that the students are motivated to learn more. Inside Eden HillsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Lucas practised multiplication and division facts and worked on telling time using real-life scenarios.

In Year 8, Ava focused on solving trigonometric equations as well as applying circular geometry concepts through diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan explored applications of differentiation in physics by working through circular motion problems and interpreting the meaning of derivatives in practical contexts.

Recent Challenges

Several Year 11 and 12 students have not completed enough independent revision between sessions, which led to slower recall during test preparation. One tutor noted, "He hadn't done much revision between our last two sessions," resulting in uncertainty with key equations for circular motion and gravitation.

In Year 8 maths, messy written work when solving money and time problems made it difficult to identify where misunderstandings occurred—students often confused cents and dollars or skipped checking their answers.

A Year 10 student understood content in-session but struggled to complete similar homework independently, leading to gaps that reappeared by the next lesson.

Recent Achievements

One Eden Hills tutor noticed a Year 10 student who, after weeks of hesitating to revise, took initiative this session and completed extra practice for two upcoming tests—something he hadn't done before.

In Year 8 science, another student made real headway with magnetic induction; previously confused by the topic, he could now explain core ideas back in his own words without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who used to silently guess math answers started eagerly talking through her problem-solving steps aloud. She finished the lesson confidently tackling new division questions on her own.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Thanks for the reports. Michael is fantastic. James and I both really like him and he is a very dedicated and diligent tutor.

We are very comfortable with Anne's tutoring of Tim and we think there has been a steady improvement.

Your help is very much appreciated.  I'm very happy with Nathan and Mason finds him very supportive. Mason does lack study skills and Nathan has been great in getting Mason focused.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Blackwood High School.
