I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to foster confidence in their students to independently learn and build confidence in their skills. A tutor should also be able to inspire curiosity so that students become better learners in their field and ask questions. Lastly, the tutor should be flexible to personalise the…

Eventually get them to a level where they become self-sufficient and confident in their abilities to teach themselves as well as think for themselves. These are skills that will be required when going to university as often (in my experience) you cannot have the professor/tutor sit down with you and go through concepts you didn't comprehend. These…

Some of the essential things a tutor can do for a student include listening to their needs and what specifically they are having trouble with. Always be encouraging towards them and kindly suggest areas for improvement. Keep it professional, stay on topic. Verify their understanding each step of the way when working through a problem. I believe…

The most important thing by far is engagement. Tutoring is good, although it can only do so much if the students interest is elsewhere. The best thing a tutor can do is help the student engage more in school as the student will spend 80% of their time in the classroom and 20% with a tutor so using that 80% to your advantage is the most important…

Helping a student to enjoy a subject, or at the very least succeed, is a major thing to help them through school. Everyone has different needs, and a tutor helps accommodate those needs in an efficient way. Inspiration can go a long way, and improving their enjoyment of a subject may set them up for a future they love. When I tutored my friends in…

The purpose of a tutor is to provide a one-on-one learning experience; thus, a tutor should be able to adapt to their student's specific needs. A tutor needs to identify weak areas and improve them but also foster confidence in students strong areas. Obviously, a tutor should be well versed in the content that they're teaching. Please note,…

Offer a different approach to the content apart from the one done in a formal school setting. There are many different learning styles and to identify which one suits the learner, making them aware of this and helping them to change the content into a way they understand ensures lifelong learning for the student. Make sure that the student is comfortable with your way of teaching and is actively involved. Tutoring is not only about jabbering stuff even though the student doesn’t understand a single thing. You have to take it slow and steady until your student is confident enough and can explain the same concept back to you even well. - calmness…

Inside Elermore ValeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Caitlyn focused on similar triangles by working through AAS, SAS, and SSS practice questions, and used online tools to deepen understanding of ratios.

In Year 11, Ethan tackled financial mathematics by interpreting worded questions involving simple interest and compound interest calculations, including rearranging equations for buying on terms.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Grace prepared for HSC Physics assessments by reviewing the wave nature of light and practising extended response questions on topics such as the Michelson-Morley experiment and relativity postulates.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student was urged to slow down and "watch out for double negatives when adding and subtracting," as misreading these led to lost marks on worded questions.

In Year 11, a recurring issue appeared: "must read the question carefully to identify changes in question type"—skimming instructions in Buying on Terms resulted in using the wrong formulas.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student's HSC preparation suffered from shallow written responses; as noted, "the answering question depth required in the exam" wasn't met, which meant that critical marks were left behind even when concepts were understood.

Recent Achievements

One Elermore Vale tutor noticed a big shift in Josh, who now carefully writes out every step of worded maths problems instead of skipping ahead—he's gone from missing key details to interpreting tricky questions on his own.

A high school student who previously hesitated with financial maths is now confidently converting compounding periods and independently finding the right variables without help.

Another teen, once unsure about rearranging algebraic equations, surprised herself by solving for x without support after just a few practice rounds; she even asked the tutor for an extra challenge at the end.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Wallsend Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Wallsend South Public School.
