I feel if a tutor can leave the student with a longing for learning more or a satisfaction that they conquered a difficult topic is most important. I can give examples that the person can relate to which makes the topic easier to understand. I also know where a student might face difficulties on a certain…

I believe that a tutor should not just provide answers to a problem, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think to solve problems. This is why teaching maths or physics should go beyond drilling procedures, formulas and theorems into a student's head - tutors should encourage students to develop a wholesome…

Be their friend and role model. Students have already enough to deal with in school. They need someone to listen to them and help them to clarify all their doubts. In a nutshell, I think a tutor must be : --> A friend --> An academic trainer --> A mentor --> A planner As a tutor, i focus more on an overall development than just focusing on the…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student feel more confident — not just with the subject, but in themselves. I think we sometimes forget how big of a difference it makes when someone believes they can actually do it. I really try to celebrate the small wins — whether they’ve just understood a tough concept or even…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond just teaching content. A tutor should help a child feel capable--- when students believe in themselves, everything else becomes easier. It's important to break concepts down simply, meet students where they are, and help them move forward step by step without overwhelm.…

To get them engaged and interested in a subject or topic. Building a caring relationship in my opinion is the most important thing a tutor can do for any student. It is only that foundation can a tutor be able to deliver his best and at the same time the student will be keen to learn. It is the conducive learning environment that a tutor has to provide to enable the student to work to his/her maximum…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not teach them how to answer a specific question but to ensure they understand the logic behind the answering methodology. Learning can be spilt into 3 parts. First being simply understanding the content without worrying about exams. Second being revising and coming up questions possible from the content and getting a deeper understanding. Third is looking at the exam questions and how to form the answer to get maximum marks. Building the trust between the tutor and the student is what I believe it is most important. I think simply put a tutor should give a student confidence that they can learn anything that is presented to them. As a tutor, I think it is very important to make sure that a student does not lose hope. Even in moments of distress, it is my responsibility that the student does not lose confidence in his abilities. Losing confidence or hope is the worst thing that can happen before an exam. It is also important to develop a trusting relationship with a…

Inside Elizabeth BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Taiki focused on reading comprehension by working through a story, practising phonics to decode unfamiliar words, and then writing sentences using new vocabulary.

In Year 10, Maddison tackled trigonometry concepts such as solving for angles and sides in right-angled triangles—including elevation, depression, and bearings—using class exercises for extra practice.

For Year 11, Jessica concentrated on theoretical versus experimental probability and also reviewed non-linear relationships like parabolas and exponentials ahead of her upcoming exam.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 maths, one student's reluctance to write out working—"he tries to calculate the entirety of a problem in his head"—led to missed steps and hidden errors, especially in multi-step problems.

For a senior student preparing for exams, messy written work in probability tasks made reviewing answers difficult and slowed down corrections.

Another high schooler repeatedly used the wrong numbers in formulas because she did not check her work step-by-step during quizzes; this meant even strong conceptual understanding was undermined by preventable mistakes.

When students avoided asking teachers for clarification in class, misconceptions persisted longer than necessary.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Elizabeth Bay recently noticed that a Year 10 student, who previously struggled to organise her work, took real initiative by jotting down the specific sections she wanted to review and confidently worked through revision questions on probability and bearings without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student who used to skip steps has begun reading each question aloud before answering, which means he now picks up on key details and avoids earlier mistakes—especially when tackling multi-step word problems.

In an upper high school maths session, one student finally tackled factorising quadratics independently after several weeks of hesitation, asking for extra practice questions rather than waiting for help.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Tim has now had 3 sessions with Dean and so far it seems to be a positive experience. Tim enjoys his company and understands the way he explains things , I guess this is a good place to start and hopefully it will continue to build into a rewarding learning experience.

Thank you for writing to me enquiring about Aaron's progress.  So far so good, I think he is really happy with the teacher Mihika.  I think they work very well together.

We have been very happy with Ameya , he has been well prepared, punctual and very committed to his work with Emma... I would happily recommend both Ezy Math tutoring and Ameya to people.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Vincent's College.
