The first and foremost is being patient. Not everyone can learn and understand concepts at the same pace, so patience is very important. Trying different learning styles when the initial learning style doesn't work is another one, because people don't learn the same way. I'm very good at breaking down complex concepts into clear,…

In mi opinion, a tutor should take care of the students in terms of ensuring that they understand each one of the concepts and topics explained. He/she should not hesitate in repeating an explanation as many times as necessary if the student doesn't understand any topic. After finishing my bachelor in Aerospace engineering and some international…

The tutor has so many key responsibilities and actions to do. As he/she needs to aware that individuals are understanding, there should be effective communication, setting realistic goals, creating a supportive environment and also providing them a constructive feedback. I am good in teaching and received very good compliment from my colleagues…

A tutor must be able to secure a positive impression of the subject in the student's mind, regardless of how arduous the subject content might be. A tutor is a third parent and must have immense patience to ensure that the child grasps each and every detail, even if they ask us to repeat what we taught. Besides, as tutors, we must always advocate…

I believe that not all students learn at the same pace but all students have their own strengths and potential. With the right guidance, students can maximize their strengths. It is creating an environment that will bring out the potential of each student. It is guiding the students in building their study habits, gaining their confidence and…

There are 2 jobs of a tutor. To make the student understand what they are learning and also encourage them to do quality practice questions. I have a really deep understanding in all concepts of maths and physics (high school level), and I'm really good at breaking them down into simpler bits. I also know the importance of practicing these…

The most important things as far as I'm considered, are to be readily approachable, and constantly supportive during the entire teaching process. In addition, having a good relationship with the students, being considerate about their holistic health, so that students can come to me for suggestions, not only academically, but also anything my past…

I believe that creating a safe space where the child is comfortable enough to ask as many questions as they need is one of the most important things a tutor can do for a student. Patience, admitting if I don't know content (and then researching it for next time), time management skills, the ability to re-explain concepts in different…

In my opinion, learning and getting good grades are two things that complement each other. Once students have a firm grasp of the knowledge points in the learning phase, then they will have enough confidence to cope with the exam. As a tutor, you need to help students absorb knowledge more easily at the stage of learning knowledge. For example,…

Being understanding of students' learning experiences; whether it is confident about the topic or frustrated and disappointed when they don't yet "get it", the perspective helps me more likely able to keep a student's learning energy alive, thus more efficiently helping them. The most important virtue that I consider for being a tutor for a student is having the patience to understand what they are expecting out of me, in order for me to give them back the necessary skills and training they require to excel in their domain. In addition to this, having a practical approach other than the traditional teaching style is…

From my perspective of view, the most important things I can teach a student are the interests in this subject and finding pleasure from it. If that does not work, I will teach students the train of thought when solving different types of questions, summarise the key points and raise efficiency in their learning. I think teaching students how to be independent is something tutors must do. Prioritizing things like active learning wherein students get to question things themselves, rather than being spoon-fed answers is important. Making them learn that they can find the answers themselves if they put in the effort is important. And obviously creating all…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient. Never give up on students. Local Reviews

Liz, Elwood

Inside ElwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Frankie practised solving simultaneous equations using both elimination and substitution methods, as well as reviewing strategies for tackling measurement and geometry revision questions.

In Year 10, Isla focused on expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions, alongside strengthening her understanding of negative numbers through step-by-step practice.

For Year 12, Alice completed a detailed review of matrix division and the identity matrix before moving on to advanced applications with transition matrices in preparation for upcoming assessment tasks.

Recent Challenges

A significant amount of knowledge...was lost over the last week due to incompletion of homework for a Year 11 student who missed assignments on credit card and interest problems, resulting in noticeable gaps during a weekly quiz.

In VCE English, another student arrived with only half their assigned essay finished, citing busy SAC periods but not communicating in advance.

For a Year 12 mathematics lesson, skipping careful reading meant important details in compound interest questions were overlooked, requiring repeated correction.

Meanwhile, one junior secondary student relied heavily on step-by-step memorisation for algebra instead of developing conceptual understanding, which slowed progress during multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Elwood tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with matrix operations—she's now creating her own process for multiplication and tackling advanced transition matrices almost independently.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student who struggled with algebra is expanding brackets more accurately and now works through negative numbers with less prompting than before.

In English, Will (Year 12) has started asking for new vocabulary during sessions and independently picks out errors in his writing—a big step up from earlier weeks when he'd avoid revising drafts.

Last session, he submitted his homework on time and complete.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Columba's School.
