According to me the basic responsibility for a tutor is to nurture the student's natural strength and elicit more learning and development than a classroom teacher and also understand their strength, weaknesses and interests that would help them academically successful. My teaching methods according to different students ,patience and appropriate…

I see my role as a tutor to guide my students, providing them with the strategies necessary to develop their knowledge and understanding. I think its important to be patient and allow students to build their own understanding with my guidance. I also think that it is important to be a good role model for students. As a student myself, I…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to clear the concepts. If a student knows the concept well then he/she can apply it to any problem pertaining to a particular topic. A tutor can do this by giving real world examples and discussing about the topic in general. Math is one of the most fun subjects to learn if one understands…

A tutor must understand a student from within from their thinking style to their work ethic. This is the crux of a tutor's job as understanding this will allow the tutor to provide the right personalised learning approach for the student. Along with that, every tutor must ensure that their student feels confident in their subject as confidence…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do to a student is to make them motivated to learn the subject, whether that be from the passion of the tutor or from the interest that they develop for that subject over time. I am really good at explaining concepts and simplifying them in a way that the students could understand them. I was…

I believe a tutor should always be able to accommodate to the students' circumstances when helping them learn something new. Many tutors are often high-scoring students, while many students will be those struggling. This leads to some tutors not being considerate enough of the students' lack of prior knowledge and understanding. It is the tutor's…

I believe the most important thing that a tutor can do is guide and support a student in their knowledge. Patience is really important for students. Providing positive feedback, reassurance and encouragement, even if they don't quite understand yet. And finally being approachable and willing to explain something multiple times until they understand. I think my greatest strength as a tutor is my patience. I will happily go over concepts multiple times…

A good tutor should make sure that his/her student understands the essence and real life importance of the subject he/she is teaching. Nothing is stronger than a photographic memory, explaining things and concepts in a flow diagram or figure form will help students to retain more information. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is make the student feel supported and understood. Ceating a space where the student feels safe to ask questions and make mistakes is important. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is foster a student’s confidence and independence in learning. The most important thing a tutor can do is build confidence, not just improve grades. A great tutor helps students believe in their own ability to learn, even when things feel tough. Its also about creating structure, consistency, and genuine encouragement. At the end of the day, tutoring isn't just about teaching content, its about helping…

Listen to what the student actually wants help with and find out the root cause of why they are stuck or confused. The teacher needs to work together with the student, not against them. I think the most important job of a tutor is to help the student, not just in answering questions, but by giving them a fundamental understanding of the content that they would be able to reapply to many other questions, particularly ones that are curveballs. Apart from that, giving them the belief that they can do well if they just apply…

1. Convey to the student that if they are finding a subject hard, it is natural. They just haven't found a way that works for them and we are willing to explore that 2. A tutor should understand their student's potential and work accordingly and find ways of teaching that work for them 3. Be patient with a student and have empathy and give them…

I think tutors need to be able to diagnose the cause of why a student does not understand something, so good communication skills are essential. However, having a good enough understanding of the content to be able to explain it in multiple ways is also a critical skill, whether that be graphically, numerically, with an analogy, or in several…

Liz, Elwood

Inside ElwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Frankie practised solving simultaneous equations using both elimination and substitution methods, as well as reviewing strategies for tackling measurement and geometry revision questions.

In Year 10, Isla focused on expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions, alongside strengthening her understanding of negative numbers through step-by-step practice.

For Year 12, Alice completed a detailed review of matrix division and the identity matrix before moving on to advanced applications with transition matrices in preparation for upcoming assessment tasks.

Recent Challenges

A significant amount of knowledge...was lost over the last week due to incompletion of homework for a Year 11 student who missed assignments on credit card and interest problems, resulting in noticeable gaps during a weekly quiz.

In VCE English, another student arrived with only half their assigned essay finished, citing busy SAC periods but not communicating in advance.

For a Year 12 mathematics lesson, skipping careful reading meant important details in compound interest questions were overlooked, requiring repeated correction.

Meanwhile, one junior secondary student relied heavily on step-by-step memorisation for algebra instead of developing conceptual understanding, which slowed progress during multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Elwood tutor noticed a real shift in a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with matrix operations—she's now creating her own process for multiplication and tackling advanced transition matrices almost independently.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student who struggled with algebra is expanding brackets more accurately and now works through negative numbers with less prompting than before.

In English, Will (Year 12) has started asking for new vocabulary during sessions and independently picks out errors in his writing—a big step up from earlier weeks when he'd avoid revising drafts.

Last session, he submitted his homework on time and complete.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Columba's School.
