Help them gain interest in what they're trying to study/learn. The problem with kids not wanting to learn isn't because the subject is hard, usually it's because they have no interest in the subject whatsoever. There's always a way to show someone the appeal of every single subject. It can be hard but it's very possible and many teachers and…

Understand where and why a student fails and faces difficulty and impart teaching in a way which is student centric, rather than what suits the tutor himself. I as a student myself can relate to a student's mindset. My understanding, empathy filled and patient attitude are my strengths as a tutor. Also, having regular candid conversations with…

Most importantly a tutor should understand the goals and needs of each student individually - what they find difficult and why they struggle with certain concepts. Subsequently, tutors should teach students the concepts and ensure they understand how to solve problems, this provides lifelong problem solving skills rather than memorised methods to…

Teach them subjects in such a way that is relatable to them and they are able to conceptualise and visualise the imperativeness of the subject and help them build a model of study that etches the subject on their memory in the most easiest way possible. To be patient and be willing to go over any concept or problem over and over again to make sure…

To be a positive role model and to help them see learning as a fun experience. I believe that a tutor should talk to their students as people, learn what they’re good and bad at, and also to be able to help them learn to study and stay calm through their exam periods. I have a lot of energy and a positive attitude, I plan out my lessons…

Understanding the subject on a deep level and having the communication skills required to transfer the knowledge, a tutor must be able to help people of varying skill levels understand the subject in the easiest way possible for that particular person. Thorough, work to help the student truly understand rather than just doing the problems and…

Some of the most important responsibilities of a tutor include being available and easy to contact, which ensures that I am consistently there for the student. In addition, explaining concepts clearly through adaptable teaching methods is essential, as students learn in different ways. It is also important to check for genuine understanding rather…

I have always thought that a tutor's main objective is to inspire the student by showing the interesting sides of whatever is being taught. As a tutor, it's my objective to show mathematics is essentially a language in which relationships are translated to number which would otherwise be intangible and impossible to observe with the naked eye. By…

A good tutor is a friend, philosopher and guide. Not all the students have same level of learning and understanding. Tutor can explore the hidden capabilites and abilites in a student and help them to achieve their career goals. tutor can guide them not only academically but in personality attribute as well. The important thing is, there should…

Inside Emu PlainsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alexia focused on understanding decimal places and reviewed her recent test to identify specific mistakes.

Year 9 student Alexia worked through practice questions on composite shapes, kites, trapezoids, circles and arcs, as well as calculating the volume of triangular prisms.

In Year 12, James tackled exam-style problems involving probability—distinguishing between independent and non-mutually exclusive events—and practiced key statistics skills such as finding mode, median, range, and interquartile range.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student preparing for HSC maths avoided showing working in series questions, making it hard to pinpoint where misunderstandings occurred—"he wasn't naturally seeing what the question was asking," as one tutor observed.

In Year 9 algebra revision, incomplete homework meant missed opportunities to clarify misconceptions before a test.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student often practiced only familiar decimal and Pythagoras problems, leaving harder topics untouched.

During calculus applications with a senior student, fatigue led to skipped written steps and confusion in worded velocity problems; this left gaps when tackling multi-step exam tasks under pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Emu Plains tutoring session saw a Year 12 student, Alistair, shift from just listening during calculus lessons to actively working out equations on his own and even spending extra time practising his calculus rules at home.

Meanwhile, in Year 11 chemistry, Jack moved from needing help to intuitively finding where to look for answers during reaction questions—he's now choosing problem-solving paths independently.

For a younger win, Rumaysa (Year 6) has gone from rushing through maths problems with mistakes to deliberately writing each step and double-checking her work before moving on.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Penrith City Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of The Way Primary School.
