A tutor is a guide to show the right path. Students might stumble a lot, but tutor should hold him up, stand by him and show the right direction. Never giving up on a student, looking for opportunities to advance their skill is what a tutor should always do. I try to explain things from the student's perspective. For example, a gamer might…

Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. I am an expert in Math and Programming and their academic content -- I know the subject's concepts, ideas and problems inside out. I…

In my opinion, these are: -High level of emotional connection to really see the needs of the student. -High adaptability in its own way of teaching, since maybe there is a different way in which the student can understand more and/or better. -Patience, especially in subjects that are tricky to get. I have a very applied way to understand…

The most important thing would be to instill interest. To be called a succesfull tutor, one need to instill interest to their students to study during their own time, because we only meet them once or twice a week and most of the time they have to learn by themselves. My strenghs would be my perseverance and open mindedness in teaching. Each…

As a tutor, it is your obligation to teach in a way that your pupil develops a passion for the topic he is learning. There is nothing worst than somebody who is bored while learning. Focusing on deeply understanding and on practical application is key to awaken a desire to continue learning. "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build self-confidence. From my own experience, I know that grasping a concept feels much harder when it seems 'impossible.' Confidence changes that perspective, making challenges feel doable and providing the energy needed to tackle difficult problems. I foster this through…

To me, the most essential role a tutor can fulfill is that of an enabler and empowerer. I believe a tutor's primary goal should be to provide students with a strong foundation of knowledge and a resilient problem-solving framework, not only to tackle academic challenges but also to navigate any obstacle life may present. An empowering tutor equips…

Tutors have to be cooperative and empathetic to teach students. Moreover, they need to embody leadership qualities. It is necessary for the students to enjoy learning so that they can have a complete grasp of knowledge about a particular subject. This will allow them to achieve their desired results. I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to have them gain confidence with themselves in terms of excelling in school. I think this confidence is important in not just getting high marks in quizzes and tests, but I believe that being confident will help them long-term in solving problems not just in school, even though…

As a tutor, it is important that you pass on the right knowledge to the student. Make them think about things by themselves instead of giving them straight away. A tutor, shouldn't discourage students if they ask a dumb question, they should resolve all their queries with a good understanding. A tutor's job is to support a student and be curious…

I think the best thing a tutor can do is make learning feel achievable. A big part of that is adapting to how each student learns, breaking things down in a way that makes sense to them, and giving them the confidence to tackle challenges on their own. Tutoring isn't just about getting through the syllabus, it's about showing students how to think…

I think it is important for the tutor to influence the student to be more enthusiastic towards his studies. It is easier to learn stuff with focus and the right attitude. The tutor has to try and make sessions interesting. Also, at the end of the day, the student must not be dependent on the tutor. As a tutor, you know you have succeeded when once…

I think that understanding why a student is struggling is the most important thing a tutor can do. A student may be struggling with the subject itself or may be struggling with a specific concept. A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. Ezy and professional all the way! The response time was quick (after we had had poor results in our prior attempts to organize a tutor for our son) We had our first tutoring session 2 days after making contact, and the result has already started to show only a couple of weeks in. They also follow up with interesting support material to compliment the sessions and make sure you as parent have realistic understanding on how the process works.
Ellen, Erskineville

Inside ErskinevilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Sam focused on algebra basics and graphing, then moved into trigonometry topics like similar triangles and the law of cosines, using diagrams to clarify each step.

For Year 10 student Jamie, lessons addressed linear equations and systems of linear equations, along with strategies for solving quadratic equations and interpreting graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Alex worked through algorithms for subtraction and multiplication after a pre-assessment identified current strengths and set clear math goals.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, one student found multi-step word problems overwhelming, struggling to identify key information and break tasks into manageable parts; "she stated that she is often overwhelmed at all the information given to her."

In Year 11, missing out on reviewing ratios and rates before a test led to easy marks being lost, as noted when the student relied on their own judgment rather than systematically covering all topics.

For a Year 12 student, skipping questions on a practice exam meant they missed opportunities to apply feedback or clarify uncertainties. This sometimes left gaps unaddressed before assessment deadlines arrived.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Erskineville noticed Kiera is now independently tackling tricky algebra problems—she used to wait for help, but recently solved most on her own and even explained her thinking out loud.

Raphael, a high school student, showed real initiative by trying different problem-solving strategies his teacher suggested; he completed complex algorithms without prompting and was eager to dive into programming Flappy Bird after a demo.

Another win came when Kiera finished the entire trigonometry set perfectly this week—without needing any assistance from her tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newtown Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Erskineville Public School.
