As a tutor, it's very important to have patience and not rushing the student into learning. It's also important to keep them motivated and encouraged in order to build their confidence into solving problems. It is important to create an environment where students are not afraid of making mistakes as that's a valuable part of learning and helps in…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them confidence as a learner, not only for the subject they are learning, but more generally. Providing tutoring techniques that match the student's learning style is also extremely important. My passion for teaching brings a level of enthusiasm to lessons that helps to create a…

Since I am a student right now, I just don't like when my teacher doesn't explain properly. This goes within me as I make sure my student understands quality over quantity in a particular class. Because everybody's time is crucial in today's era. I am a very dedicated person. I think I understand and explain concepts from a student's perspective.…

One of the most important thing a tutor can do for a student, is not only make the subject fun and easier to understand but to make the student believe in himself/herself. Most of the students, do not feel very confident in their own understanding of the subject and hesitate to participate in class discussions. I believe by making the student…

Provide a safe learning space and encourage determination as well as helping them set reasonable academic goals. It is also important that they learn to enjoy learning things. I think my experience as a recent graduate of 2023 is an advantage, as I am able to relate to students on a personal level and have recent experience with the syllabus. In…

I think having a positive relationship with the student is really important, in order to ensure there is mutual trust and understanding between student and tutor. The student understands that you want the best for them and in turn will try their best with you. In order to establish this, it is important to understand the pupil's likes, dislikes,…

I think the most important thing as a tutor is not only to teach students. I think it's important to ensure whether the students were able to understand the topic. At the end of each class, I would engage and interact with each student about their understanding of the topic that was taught. I would also encourage them to ask questions if they…

Personally I think the most important thing for a tutor to do for a child is to create a fun and helpful environment. A child obviously will disengage with a tutor and learning content if the tutor is detrimentally critical of a student which would instill fear and anxiety in the child and in fact, make them absorb less of what the tutor is…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to develop their confidence and skills to be able to problem solve independently. That requires building a students skills to not only understand the techniques which can be used but also how to most effectively apply them. This is particularly important as it enables students to become…

I think the most important things a tutor can do are: build the student’s confidence, give them a clear structure for how to approach problems, and create a safe space where they can make mistakes and learn from them. A good tutor doesn’t just give answers; they teach students how to think through questions on their own and develop good study…

Facilitate the student's own learning by equipping them with the tools to then seek out how to learn and solve problems, and allowing the student to go where they want to go. I think I have great emotional ability as a tutor, able to connect with the way students are feeling and their attitudes and approaches to work. I think approach and attitude…

As a tutor, I believe in catering to the students needs. Different students have different learning styles, so it is important to adapt my teaching styles to the individual. Building a caring relationship in my opinion is the most important thing a tutor can do for any student. A tutor's job is to build confidence and make learning feel rewarding. That starts with clear explanations, patient encouragement, and adapting to the student's pace. It also means modelling effective study habits and problem-solving strategies, so they can work independently. When students enjoy the process and trust their skills, their results…

To always be humble. Ezy and professional all the way! The response time was quick (after we had had poor results in our prior attempts to organize a tutor for our son) We had our first tutoring session 2 days after making contact, and the result has already started to show only a couple of weeks in. They also follow up with interesting support material to compliment the sessions and make sure you as parent have realistic understanding on how the process works.

Inside ErskinevilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Sam focused on algebra basics and graphing, then moved into trigonometry topics like similar triangles and the law of cosines, using diagrams to clarify each step.

For Year 10 student Jamie, lessons addressed linear equations and systems of linear equations, along with strategies for solving quadratic equations and interpreting graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 4 student Alex worked through algorithms for subtraction and multiplication after a pre-assessment identified current strengths and set clear math goals.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9, one student found multi-step word problems overwhelming, struggling to identify key information and break tasks into manageable parts; "she stated that she is often overwhelmed at all the information given to her."

In Year 11, missing out on reviewing ratios and rates before a test led to easy marks being lost, as noted when the student relied on their own judgment rather than systematically covering all topics.

For a Year 12 student, skipping questions on a practice exam meant they missed opportunities to apply feedback or clarify uncertainties. This sometimes left gaps unaddressed before assessment deadlines arrived.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Erskineville noticed Kiera is now independently tackling tricky algebra problems—she used to wait for help, but recently solved most on her own and even explained her thinking out loud.

Raphael, a high school student, showed real initiative by trying different problem-solving strategies his teacher suggested; he completed complex algorithms without prompting and was eager to dive into programming Flappy Bird after a demo.

Another win came when Kiera finished the entire trigonometry set perfectly this week—without needing any assistance from her tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newtown Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Erskineville Public School.
