The most important thing a tutor can do is help the student develop interest for the subject. Once the student is throughly interested in the subject, he/she starts to explore on their own. After that the tutor just needs to guide the student in the correct path and occasionally help with difficult problems. However this is not an easy task.…

Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students feel…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them confidence to achieve anything in life. They can help students learn and grow and in turn get to see the students do great things. I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, support their individual learning needs, and encourage independent thinking. It’s not just about giving answers it’s about helping students develop the skills to solve problems on their own. A good tutor creates a safe, supportive environment where…

I think the tutor should understand what a student's basics are and what he initially knows about the topic. He can try to ask him if he/she doesn't understand the things which were taught. The tutor should be able to motivate the student and make sure learning is not a burden and it's all about enjoying the subjects which he has too. As a tutor,…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide guidance, build confidence, and foster a love for learning. A tutor should make the environment comfortable for the student to ask questions, make mistakes, and learn at his or her own pace. It is also equally as important to adapt to each student's unique learning…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do is to transfer the positive energy about learning to the student. A good tutor should also create an appropriate learning path that leads to the student's goals and achievements. I try to understand the student's abilities and needs. I can create an appropriate teaching strategy by building a…

The most important thing a tutor should do for a student is to make the concepts clear for a particular topic instead of just mugging up the concept. I believe that as a tutor, what I can help with most is finding out the missing links in the knowledge network of my students and helping them to make those up. I see a tutor as someone who can motivate students to learn and build the students' confidence to recognize their strengths. Like planting a tree, it may take sometime for teaching to be rewarding but it has a great impact as a tutor get a chance to contribute to a positive change in students' life. I see myself as a communicative, friendly,…

Above all, I believe it is the moral support and social relationship as a mentor for the student. In other words, to provide them with attention and assistance that they otherwise would not benefit from in a classroom setting where there are lots of other students for one teacher. I believe in helping students achieve their own best, no matter…

Local Reviews

All went well with Sharmin and James got a lot from the sessions.
Sharmin, Moonee Ponds

Inside Essendon WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Liam worked on decimals with addition and subtraction, using number lines to visualise calculations.

For Year 9, Olivia tackled factorisation of monic quadratics and solved area problems involving algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan revised trigonometry concepts—focusing on the Cartesian plane—and practised finding equations of lines using real-world examples from past assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student relied heavily on a formula sheet for finance problems—when asked to write out the interest formula from context, he paused and searched his notes instead. As one tutor observed, "he goes to his formula sheet for questions that in my opinion can be written... just by knowing how to use maths."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled with structuring her working out for index laws, leading to confusion during revision.

In Year 12 Physics, slow rearrangement of formulas and mixing up indices often forced extra time spent reworking steps rather than deepening understanding of concepts like relativity.

Recent Achievements

One Essendon West tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who used to get stuck on physics formula work—now he's confidently picking the right formulas and manipulating them without hesitation.

A Year 10 student recently tackled factorising trinomials in her head and started checking her answers independently, instead of waiting for prompts.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has gone from guessing at addition to carrying out sums in his head perfectly, showing real focus during sessions.

Last week, Sam handed in an essay that received strong teacher feedback after previously struggling to express his ideas clearly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Bernard's College.
