I believe that to be considered a good tutor, one must communicate with their student in order to get the most out of a lesson. The student should walk away after each lesson feeling fulfilled and have a better understanding of content. I believe that I am strong at listening to the student's needs and adapting to fit a system that can benefit…

I see a tutor as someone who can motivate students to learn and build the students' confidence to recognize their strengths. Like planting a tree, it may take sometime for teaching to be rewarding but it has a great impact as a tutor get a chance to contribute to a positive change in students' life. I see myself as a communicative, friendly,…

Effective methods of studying, instead of encouraging them to spend too much time and get stressed of the massive load of knowledge. It is so much better if a tutor and teach them how to manage their time and work, how to remember the key concepts and apply them to do the real work. I think creating a supportive learning environment is very important as it will slowly build their confidence and not make them want to give up. Along with my problem-solving skills, my deeper understanding of the subjects is important for my student as well. I have strong communication skills which allow me to engage with students, making their…

As I have mentioned above, every student's different capabilities and strategies to learn in their own way need to be considered before even beginning to tutor them. If a tutor teaches without having this in mind, there are chances that even after months of teaching, the student will not grasp the information as well as he/she probably could if…

Help them to do the best they can, and to enjoy doing it. I believe that they go together, that "learning" which is not enjoyed is often, in the long run, not real learning at all, just hoop jumping. Respect for the situations of my students, flexibility in responding to the sometimes substantial differences among them, humour as a means of…

A tutor should offer an individualised teaching method that works to that student's strengths and takes into account any weaknesses. Whether that mean explaining new concepts in more engaging ways or focusing on certain aspects that a student is finding particularly difficult to grasp. A tutor should also help students feel more confident in their…

Listen to what the student has to say, and base their teaching strategy around their individual needs. If the tutor doesn’t listen to a student or understand their struggles with certain areas, how could the tutor expect good results from their student? Instead of just focusing on one method that only appeals to a single learning style, varying teaching techniques can cater your lessons to different learning styles. Students will be more successful…

The first thing is to make students not feeling too resistant to math. You need to be interested in a subject in order to achieve a good result. Also, a tutor should make the student feel comfortable and relax, and be confident to do math questions and ask questions. My strength is to use the simplest way to explain math questions. I had always…

Inside FairfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Daniel revised index laws and logarithmic functions, focusing on simplifying expressions and using worked examples.

In Year 10, Emily practised sketching curves of quartic and cubic functions as well as reviewing plans for next year's topics.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Jack explored integration by recognition and definite integrals, applying these skills to area under curves with step-by-step guidance.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student struggled with interpreting worded questions in maths, often feeling stuck before the process "clicked." As a tutor noted, "she needs a lot of work on interpreting worded questions," leading to hesitation and incomplete answers.

In VCE Maths Methods (Year 11), another student was visibly unconfident despite correct working, pausing with "I don't know" even when on track—this self-doubt slowed progress and led to unnecessary rechecking.

Meanwhile, in Year 4 arithmetic, one child showed reluctance to attempt multiplication problems independently, sometimes saying they "can't be bothered," which meant fewer chances to reinforce number sense during practice.

Recent Achievements

A Fairfield tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 9 student who, after initially finding bearings problems confusing, now approaches them independently and solves worded simultaneous equations without needing guidance.

In Year 10, another student who used to hesitate with worded questions is now able to break down linear rule problems clearly and even constructs formulas on her own during lessons.

Meanwhile, one of the younger students has become much more comfortable with long division; after working through examples together, she now completes similar problems confidently by herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Fairfield Primary School.
