If a student achieves his/her academic goals because of me, I can proudly say that I am a successful tutor. The most important strength of mine is the ability to communicate in a way that makes the student feel motivated, enthusiastic, and…

A tutor should be able to engage with a student and inspire them when teaching a topic. That way students can be interested in the content they are learning and perform better academically. Communication - I can convey abstract ideas visually, auditorily, or note-taking and using flash cards. I understand that students may need different tools to…

The two biggest things I think a tutor can do for a student is to inspire and support. If a student is inspired, there's half the tutor's job gone. A student who wants to learn is far more likely to succeed than one who does not. But in saying this, this is clearly not easy for some students. A tutor also needs to support a student through…

Creating an environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and exploring ideas they may be unsure about is one of the most important things a tutor can do. The tutor should act like a robust bridge between the student and knowledge. He/she should guide the student in achieving erudition by showing the correct path. Tutors should also try to develop interest in students for subjects and it should not be confined to the prescribed curriculum. On the other hand it is prerogative for the tutor to realize…

A tutor should be able to and simplify a particular concept making it easier for a student to understand. A tutor should also be able to motivate the student and provide constant encouragement when the student is feeling demotivated. A tutor should also be able to adapt and improve teaching styles depending on the student and their progress. It…

The most important thing a tutor can do in my opinion is be patient with a student and try and understand the problem from their perspective. I also believe that finding the best learning method for a student is a key part of the role as a tutor, and this will…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be a mentor. Inside FairfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava focused on converting fractions to percentages and explored main causes and solutions for climate change, including renewable energy sources.

In Year 9, Ethan worked through exam-style questions involving the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of negative integers as well as identifying coefficients and simplifying algebraic expressions.

For Year 10, Sophie practiced solving worded simultaneous equations and found midpoints between coordinates using worked examples to strengthen her understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often arrived without her school book or resources, making it impossible to check how classroom methods matched tutoring approaches. "She didn't bring her school book home, so I couldn't check how her teacher is teaching," noted one tutor.

In senior Chemistry, a Year 12 struggled to recall prior processes and did not share important test results until late in the session, limiting time for feedback and review.

In Year 3 maths, frequent loss of focus led to messy written work—her attention drifted and number patterns became harder to grasp. Tasks lingered unfinished or were rushed, causing ongoing confusion.

Recent Achievements

A Fairfield tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who, after struggling with exam nerves, began openly discussing her stress and worked with the tutor to develop strategies for staying calm in test conditions.

In another session, a Year 9 student made noticeable progress by arriving well-prepared and asking for clarification on geometry concepts she'd found confusing last month—she's also making an effort to keep her work neater than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student in primary school has started sounding out tricky words instead of guessing, which helped her tackle new spelling challenges confidently during reading time.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We couldn't be happier. Both girls are enjoying the tutoring with Jackie, and feel they are learning something new each week.

Kymberley has clicked quite well with Gayan and she seems to be very happy with him.

Annalise has settled and is working well with Sam.  He's a great tutor, very attentive and makes her think!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yeronga State High School.
