The most important things to me is to engage, motivate and involve the student with their study. Too many students suffer from sidelining and taking a backseat in education due to a number of reasons. Hence, being able to link a student's passion by showing how education is not a blocker but rather an enabler for their curiousities and wonders is…

Building a student’s love for learning is the most important part of education. When they truly enjoy what they are learning, they naturally reach their highest potential academically. Go at a pace in which the student feels comfortable, as going too quickly may be the reason they didn't understand it when their teachers taught them. Following this a tutor needs to have done some work on the subject before seeing the student as if the tutor doesn't understand what he/she is saying, the student has no chance. Also going through…

I think understanding is the most important skill for a tutor to possess. Explaining a topic is one thing, but doing so at a level that is useful for the student is another thing entirely. As a tutor, you need to be able to understand what it is that a student already understands, what it is they are struggling with, and why they are struggling.…

A good tutor will be able to make a connection with their student, and can understand their individual needs as a learner. I think that if a tutor isn't able to do this, then any knowledge they possess can't be effectively taught. I think a good tutor should also have a strong grasp over whatever they teach, and being able to teach is the biggest…

Treat the student in a nonthreatening, calm manner. Respect the student and their thought processes and engage them in the material. Do not be hyper-critical. It is the tutors responsibility to ensure the student fully understands a concept, i.e. they are able to apply knowledge by themselves especially in areas such as mathematics and physics. I…

Inside FairfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava focused on converting fractions to percentages and explored main causes and solutions for climate change, including renewable energy sources.

In Year 9, Ethan worked through exam-style questions involving the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of negative integers as well as identifying coefficients and simplifying algebraic expressions.

For Year 10, Sophie practiced solving worded simultaneous equations and found midpoints between coordinates using worked examples to strengthen her understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often arrived without her school book or resources, making it impossible to check how classroom methods matched tutoring approaches. "She didn't bring her school book home, so I couldn't check how her teacher is teaching," noted one tutor.

In senior Chemistry, a Year 12 struggled to recall prior processes and did not share important test results until late in the session, limiting time for feedback and review.

In Year 3 maths, frequent loss of focus led to messy written work—her attention drifted and number patterns became harder to grasp. Tasks lingered unfinished or were rushed, causing ongoing confusion.

Recent Achievements

A Fairfield tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who, after struggling with exam nerves, began openly discussing her stress and worked with the tutor to develop strategies for staying calm in test conditions.

In another session, a Year 9 student made noticeable progress by arriving well-prepared and asking for clarification on geometry concepts she'd found confusing last month—she's also making an effort to keep her work neater than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student in primary school has started sounding out tricky words instead of guessing, which helped her tackle new spelling challenges confidently during reading time.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are very happy, I have referred 3 families at this stage to you. I am impressed with how thorough Monica's lesson plans are, and how they move clearly from low order thinking to high order thinking in a fun way.

My son Matthew has been a student of Arda's here in Perth. Arda has been fantastic and helped Matthew through the difficulties he was having. Matthew has achieved 93% in his last exam and his class tests have all been consistently high.

It is a great pleasure for us too, to see Vas enjoying his lessons, and trying his utmost hardest to listen and catch up. This is all due to Jake too, he is a very big favourite to Vas, he loves his lessons with him, as he explains everything they are doing till Vas understands.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yeronga State High School.
