Most important things would include having the student enjoy the subject and lessons and feel comfortable asking questions. Also forming an eagerness to learn more. My strengths would be I am very patient with students and I create a comfortable atmosphere for students . This makes it easier for them to open up and asks questions, which makes it…

I think the first step in the journey between student and tutor is to build rapport. If the student does not feel comfortable in the space and time allocated, the learning achieved will be sub-optimal. Secondly, I believe patience is critical for tutors - I have seen firsthand the frustration that students can have independently to potential…

The most important thing a tutor can do is foster a passion for their subject in their student. A tutor should be passionate about the subject they are teaching and a good tutor is able to pass some of this passion onto their student. This could spark an interest that could turn into a possible career opportunity or something that they go on to…

Similar to my response to the last question, I believe a tutor exists to personalise the teaching experience. What this means is understanding exactly what it is the student that gets the student stuck on a certain topic. It may be the whole topic in general or it may be that one small concept is throwing them off, but the most important thing a…

I think its important for a tutor to be dependable and consistent. It is good for the student to know that you are always there to help them and for them to feel comfortable in the learning environment. I am very patient, I'm great a communicating to a diverse range of people and if a student is not understanding a topic I will explain it in…

I think the most important thing about being a good tutor is to have specific content expertise. A truly successful tutor can make learning real, relevant and rigorous. Such tutors are experts in their academic content -- they know the subject's concepts, ideas and problems inside out - ability to explain difficult things in a simple way -…

A tutor can explain the practical applications of the subject he or she teaches in real life. As a tutor I can make my students visualise the concepts which cannot be grasped instantly. Firstly, a tutor needs to be a strong communicator; it doesnt't matter how smart you are, if you cannot explain the concepts to your students effectively, they won't be able to learn from you. Secondly, a good tutor is someone who can offer guidence through problems and assigments, without simply giving them the answer or doing it for them.…

In my opinion the most important thing is to teach your students HOW to learn. This means to teach them how to approach a new topic and break it into smaller steps, and how to use a study technique that work best for them. As we have all heard: give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. :)…

Being empathetic and understanding is one of the most important qualities a tutor can have. A good tutor will make sure that the student understands a particular concept rather than just learn how to solve a particular problem because that way the student can apply the learning in different situations and come up with ways to find the solution by…

Creating an environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and exploring ideas they may be unsure about is one of the most important things a tutor can do. The most important thing is that they understand the theories behind certain topics. Especially in maths where many educational systems and tutors would just show the formulas in answering questions and not how they got to the formula in the first place. If they do understand the theories, then everything else will come easy. I have prior…

The tutor should act like a robust bridge between the student and knowledge. He/she should guide the student in achieving erudition by showing the correct path. Tutors should also try to develop interest in students for subjects and it should not be confined to the prescribed curriculum. On the other hand it is prerogative for the tutor to realize…

Inside FairfieldTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava focused on converting fractions to percentages and explored main causes and solutions for climate change, including renewable energy sources.

In Year 9, Ethan worked through exam-style questions involving the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of negative integers as well as identifying coefficients and simplifying algebraic expressions.

For Year 10, Sophie practiced solving worded simultaneous equations and found midpoints between coordinates using worked examples to strengthen her understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often arrived without her school book or resources, making it impossible to check how classroom methods matched tutoring approaches. "She didn't bring her school book home, so I couldn't check how her teacher is teaching," noted one tutor.

In senior Chemistry, a Year 12 struggled to recall prior processes and did not share important test results until late in the session, limiting time for feedback and review.

In Year 3 maths, frequent loss of focus led to messy written work—her attention drifted and number patterns became harder to grasp. Tasks lingered unfinished or were rushed, causing ongoing confusion.

Recent Achievements

A Fairfield tutor recently saw a Year 11 student who, after struggling with exam nerves, began openly discussing her stress and worked with the tutor to develop strategies for staying calm in test conditions.

In another session, a Year 9 student made noticeable progress by arriving well-prepared and asking for clarification on geometry concepts she'd found confusing last month—she's also making an effort to keep her work neater than before.

Meanwhile, a younger student in primary school has started sounding out tricky words instead of guessing, which helped her tackle new spelling challenges confidently during reading time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fairfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yeronga State High School.
