From what I have learnt from my current company that I am with, I think it is really important that a tutor should be able to make an impact on the student's life and being able to lead them as a good role model. During my own practices I understand it's very important to listen to the students on things such as their strengths and weaknesses or…

I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do is understand the needs of each student and adapt their teaching style in order to maximise the benefits that the student can get from tutoring. I've had my fair share of tutors growing up and the best tutors I've had weren't necessarily the most intelligent. They were empathetic individuals…

The most important thing which a tutor can do for a student is to make him understand the concept instead of just showing him how to solve the problems. One important thing a tutor can do is clearly understand what a student wants with their tutor. For example, if a student already know concepts really well, a tutor should be able to identify this and spend more time on areas where a student may struggle. Furthermore, it is important to consider the student first and foremost. A tutor should be…

Inside Fairfield HeightsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Andrew worked through different subtraction strategies and tackled word problems involving money, as well as breaking numbers into tens and ones to start the topic of length using tables.

In Year 9, Ethan focused on solving equations with brackets on both sides and practiced algebraic fraction equations, then moved into identifying trigonometric ratios in triangles.

For Year 10, Jade revised quadratic equations—using factorising—and worked with surface area and volume by calculating perimeters and areas for composite shapes such as rectangles and triangles.

Recent Challenges

Homework completion was a recurring issue across several years.

For example, a Year 9 student "attempted homework minutes before our session—only half was completed, the rest forgotten."

In senior levels, students preparing for trigonometry or algebra tests sometimes left revision incomplete, leading to last-minute stress and gaps in recall ("was only notified during class that a yearly exam was occurring tomorrow").

Fatigue and lack of motivation were common in Years 10–12, with one tutor noting, "He was very tired and lost focus multiple times; homework was not attempted."

Missed assignments often meant less time spent on feedback and consolidation.

Recent Achievements

One Fairfield Heights tutor noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to ask for clarification now comfortably brings up questions during lessons, making it easier to address misunderstandings on the spot.

In Year 8 maths, a student managed to complete all their homework this week and caught most of their earlier errors without prompting—something they struggled with last term.

Meanwhile, a primary school student finally worked through subtraction strategies independently after weeks of needing step-by-step guidance; this time, he finished the worksheet on his own without waiting for hints from the tutor.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We couldn't be happier. Both girls are enjoying the tutoring with Jackie, and feel they are learning something new each week.

Kymberley has clicked quite well with Gayan and she seems to be very happy with him.

Annalise has settled and is working well with Sam.  He's a great tutor, very attentive and makes her think!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Smithfield Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Gertrude's Catholic Primary School.
