The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to improve their confidence and help them to reach their full potential. In subjects such as math, where continuous practice and thought is necessary, the confidence of the student is very important to their success. Many students become discouraged as they believe they are bad at the…

The role of a tutor is not to solve problems for the student, but rather, their role is to equip the student with the necessary tools for them to solve problems independently. I believe i am approachable and adaptable. This is an important trait for a tutor as no two students are the same. I can adapt to fit the needs of the student in order for…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is being able to help their students free of charge when they're not in class, whether that be through social media or even by text. A tutor should also have patience towards a student and teach towards a students strength to optimize their learning, while also targeting a students weakness's.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to improve the student's attitude towards the subject. If a student is having struggles with certain subject, they may have a negative view on it which limits their openness and ability to learn. As a tutor, we should not just provide information to students but make sure they understand the…

Inside FairlightTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Jerry worked on converting between fractions, decimals and percentages, then applied these skills to solve profit and loss and GST problems.

In Year 9, Amelie focused on simplifying surds as well as multiplying and dividing surds using practice worksheets for consolidation.

Meanwhile, Clara in Year 12 tackled exam-style questions involving loans and annuities, followed by revision of the normal distribution with emphasis on calculating mean and standard deviation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 Maths, a student frequently omitted working out in exams, leading to lost marks even when answers were correct; as one tutor noted, "he lost a lot of marks in his exam as he did not show his working out."

This habit also surfaced during lessons on algebra and linear graphs—working too quickly meant calculation errors slipped through unchecked.

In upper primary English, another student struggled to identify verbs in context despite understanding the concept intuitively; difficulty arose from not connecting instructions to examples.

Without clear written steps or focused revision strategies, students spent extra time retracing work rather than progressing confidently.

Recent Achievements

A Fairlight tutor noticed that Clara, a Year 12 student, has started tackling past exam papers on her own initiative and now explains tricky network problems out loud to check her thinking—a big shift from when she'd quietly avoid these questions.

In Year 9, Jerry recently began setting out his algebra working much more clearly and takes time with difficult questions before asking for help, rather than rushing or skipping them.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 3 has begun developing her own strategies for times tables after struggling to recall them quickly just a few weeks ago.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We're proud of our son is achieving better results and thanks to a good tutor also who's I believe showing him the way also.

Richard is a lovely young man. Very patient and caring in his delivery of his tutoring. He has made my daughter feel better about her ability to problem solve her mathematics.

Isabella likes the fact that Mina will give her Maths problems to work on to reinforce what she has learnt , rather than just explain concepts and move on. She feels that Mina makes sure that she UNDERSTANDS the concepts.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Northern Beaches Library Service—or at your child's school (with permission), like Manly West Public School.
