I believe an important component of tutoring is patience, ensuring that the student completely understands the topic before moving on. This leads into following up. Following up the previous session for a couple of minutes in the next lesson is highly beneficial as the student can show their understanding of the topic, allowing the opportunity to…

Inside FerodaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Tyler worked on adding and subtracting decimals as well as rounding numbers up and down, using his Year 7 Maths booklet for targeted revision.

For Year 9, much of the syllabus was reviewed with a focus on strengthening algebra skills through repeated practice and examples.

At the senior level, a Year 12 student completed an HSC exam review by analysing past questions to clarify concepts and address common errors.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student froze up when overwhelmed in algebra and exam settings, leading to second-guessing and incomplete answers—confidence dips made even familiar content feel inaccessible under pressure.

In Year 7 maths, a workbook was "a little more organised and tidy," which sometimes made following working difficult for markers and the student alike.

Several students in Years 5–9 left homework incomplete or avoided practicing unfamiliar problems (e.g., converting fractions or using new algorithms), sticking only to easier material. This often meant extra lesson time had to be spent reviewing basics instead of building on progress.

Recent Achievements

One Ferodale tutor noted a big change in a Year 10 student who used to avoid rates and ratios questions—now she tackles these independently, having moved from frequent mistakes to solving even tricky problems without help.

In a recent Year 7 session, Tyler completed an entire algebra worksheet (previously a struggle area) and has started showing his working rather than relying on the calculator for every step.

Meanwhile, a younger student made a leap with telling time: after several weeks needing prompts, she completed a whole worksheet solo and confidently read both analogue and digital times aloud.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I'd care to share something with you.  Whilst our son, Jordan has yet of course to complete his HSC and not wishing to tempt fate, his trials are over.  Last year, Y11 he received the award for #1 ranking in general maths.  Unfortunately his teacher moved overseas and let's just say the relationship between him and his new teacher wasn't as before.  His ranking swiftly dropped to sub 15!  To compound matters, 10 students during Y12 dropped down from 'advanced' to 'general' pushing Jordan's overall ranking to sub 20. Then we came to you for help.  Since Jordan has been studying with Suraj his standards steadily began improving once again and we're extremely happy to report that Jordan's overall trial's exam results pushed him up to 4th.  Remember, this included those who dropped down to 'general.'  Now that's a positive outcome.  Naturally, full credit must go to Jordan but without your assistance we would be facing a very different outcome.

Nathan has really put great effort into getting to know Ronan, what makes him tick and where he can get the best out of him.

Everything is going well so far with Georgette and Sophia seems to enjoy the hour she has with her this week.  She appreciates some of the new strategies she has learnt.
