The most important thing a maths tutor must do is to assess the student's answer and provide feedback, as that really helps them learn from their mistakes. Equally integral is, taking a doubt session as solving the doubts of the student not only improves learning but also develops a sense of confidence in the student about the subject, which…

A tutor has the ability to mould a student and assist them in achieving the grades they deserve. Being a maths tutor, I believe, is similar to being a buddy who guides a learner in the proper route. Because I recently went through a similar struggle, I am confident that I can assist students in making studying a pleasant pastime rather than a…

I believe that as a maths tutor is to help students to believe in themselves. As we help them and guide them through different questions and explaining different concepts and doing exercises, it’s important to also remind the student once they get a question correct to acknowledge that they have done it and push for them to keep going. They do…

In my opinion, a maths tutor must be able to empathize with the student and create a safe space for them. Its important to be constructive and patient especially with the ones that take time to grasp topics. One must keep instructions clear and always strive to empower the child by focusing on their strengths. Engage them instead of lecturing…

The most important thing would be to teach a student that studying shouldn't be a chore, and that giving it their all matters more than receiving a perfect grade. One of the most important things I have realised over helping my friends in year 12 would be to walk through the question and not actually doing the question for the student. Inside FirleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sienna worked through quadratic equations by practising factorising and graphing, building a strong foundation for more advanced algebra.

In Year 11, Daniel focused on differentiation skills including finding derivatives, exploring inflection points, and analysing maximum and minimum values using sample curve sketches.

For Year 9, Milly revised surds—working with square roots and applying index laws to simplify expressions accurately.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Physics, a student struggled to select the right kinematics equation and had difficulty translating worded problems into diagrams—this often led to confusion about which variables to use.

As one tutor observed in Year 10 Maths, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors," highlighting a tendency to write down numbers without clarifying their meaning or connection to the question.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student found it challenging to organise her working clearly when handling positive and negative signs in algebra; unclear layout made tracking operations harder.

In upper primary, several students hesitated when recalling times tables, sometimes relying on written calculations for facts expected from memory—this slowed progress during more complex tasks like multi-digit multiplication.

Recent Achievements

One Firle tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who, after struggling with surds and index laws, began applying these concepts much more independently—she now solves operations with surds confidently and uses the right index rules without prompting.

In Year 9, another student who used to avoid correcting mistakes is now asking for extra questions on factorising and can walk through sum and product rule problems out loud, catching her own errors as she works.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised her tutor by reading sentences aloud to self-check punctuation placement—something she hesitated to try before.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Very happy with the way it is going thanks Gene. Benedict is a good tutor and Saf and I are both happy with her progress.

All going well. Aisling has connected well with Anthony and he feels that the tutoring is helping.

Karla's tutoring is going very well. Hilario has a lovely manner and approach and Karla seems to be getting on very well with him. They have talked about getting the basics right and he's teaching her tips to remember key things as Karla becomes very stressed in exams and cannot concentrate. So hopefully this approach will help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Payneham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Trinity Gardens School.
