Among the most crucial things a tutor should be doing is helping their students build confidence by creating a supportive environment where they feel comfortable asking questions and looking past their self-doubt. I also believe that a great tutor should be able to adapt their approach to match the student they are tutoring, as every person learns…

The most important thing I believe a tutor can do for the students is to understand and listen to them and their needs. When a tutor listens and spends time building a relationship with his/her student, it allows the tutor to personalise the learning for the student by incorporating connections to the student's interests. In addition, it allows…

A tutor should take their time with a student and make sure the student understands before moving on. I believe the purpose of tutoring should be to provide learning strategies that are specific to the individual in contrast with teaching in a classroom (at the pace of the class). A tutor should provide multiple strategies for learning. For…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is assisting them to learn about a concept which they may have been struggling with. This is because once they understand the basics of 'how' to do the problem, they will know exactly 'what' methods to used to tackle it. My strengths as a tutor are determination and perfection. For…

Tutors needs to deliver their fullest in educating the student. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be compassionate and assess their situation and help them navigate through the problems they are facing. For me, the most important thing is helping students actually enjoy math and feel comfortable with the process of not knowing right away. A lot of math is about sitting with that discomfort, resisting the urge to panic, and trusting that if you think logically, you’ll find a way through—even if it’s not the “textbook†method. I want…

The most important thing in teaching any subject is showing the big picture along with the nitty-gritty. Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

Inside FirleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sienna worked through quadratic equations by practising factorising and graphing, building a strong foundation for more advanced algebra.

In Year 11, Daniel focused on differentiation skills including finding derivatives, exploring inflection points, and analysing maximum and minimum values using sample curve sketches.

For Year 9, Milly revised surds—working with square roots and applying index laws to simplify expressions accurately.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Physics, a student struggled to select the right kinematics equation and had difficulty translating worded problems into diagrams—this often led to confusion about which variables to use.

As one tutor observed in Year 10 Maths, "he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors," highlighting a tendency to write down numbers without clarifying their meaning or connection to the question.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student found it challenging to organise her working clearly when handling positive and negative signs in algebra; unclear layout made tracking operations harder.

In upper primary, several students hesitated when recalling times tables, sometimes relying on written calculations for facts expected from memory—this slowed progress during more complex tasks like multi-digit multiplication.

Recent Achievements

One Firle tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who, after struggling with surds and index laws, began applying these concepts much more independently—she now solves operations with surds confidently and uses the right index rules without prompting.

In Year 9, another student who used to avoid correcting mistakes is now asking for extra questions on factorising and can walk through sum and product rule problems out loud, catching her own errors as she works.

Meanwhile, a younger student surprised her tutor by reading sentences aloud to self-check punctuation placement—something she hesitated to try before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Payneham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Trinity Gardens School.
