One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student would be to instill confidence in them. They should be able to encourage and motivate a student despite any struggles or failures that come their way because I believe every single mistake or failure is just a pillar to success. A tutor is a magician to the students. He can't do magic but he can do wonders if the chemistry between the tutor. The most important thing is the tutor will be a friend to the student without actually being a friend. The magic lies here. The mentality that I never give up. I was not a very gifted student so I had to work hard to understand…

Empathy, patience, and adaptability. Some tutors don't realise the students don't know as much as them. Tutors need to backtrack their knowledge, retrace the processes that took them there, and impart those vital steps into the students to bridge the gap. It takes time to truly understand the position and needs of students, requiring patience. And…

In order for the tutoring sessions to be efficient, it is essential that a good relationship be established between the tutor and the student. Often, this relationship is created quickly, but at other times, it may take a few sessions before the student opens up. The success of this relationship reveals the personalities of each of them, but it…

I am always willing to listen. Teaching a student is not lecturing them and assuming that they are a sponge and can absorb everything you say. I want to be a tutor so that I…

Tutors should personalise their teaching for each of their students. This involves understanding how a student learns best in order to cater to their learning needs and habits. For example, I find that some students prefer particular types of examples over others, and this informs me about how I can best explain new concepts to them. I've tutored…

In my opinion, a tutor's prime responsibility is to make the learner comfortable and ready for learning. I strongly believe that teaching doesn't always means learning is taking place. Inside FitzroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Gus focused on measurement skills including unit conversions, perimeter, and an introduction to surface area, as well as exploring the angle sum in triangles.

In Year 9, Maryam worked on solving simultaneous equations using substitution and elimination, then applied these methods to practical problems.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ali reviewed operations with fractions—adding, subtracting, multiplying with different denominators—and extended this knowledge to simplifying algebraic fractional expressions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 6 student in Fitzroy showed difficulty setting out work neatly and consistently dating pages, making it harder to track progress—especially when tackling worded measurement problems.

As one tutor observed, "she struggles to walk through questions speaking out loud," which made it tough to clarify her thinking on fraction conversions and unit changes.

In Year 10 English, a student forgot to submit an essay by the deadline, delaying feedback and causing extra stress before class.

A senior maths student arrived unprepared for sessions without essential materials like a pen or laptop; this slowed the start and limited practice time.

Recent Achievements

One Fitzroy tutor noticed a Year 11 student, Celeste, who used to hesitate with trigonometry word problems now confidently solves bearings and graphing tasks on her own—she even tackles complex questions without prompting.

In another session, Maryam (Year 10) moved from confusion about box plots to clearly explaining five-figure summaries and solving simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods.

Meanwhile, in Year 6 maths, Ella showed a shift from struggling with measurement topics to independently working through area and volume questions, finishing her test section on these without needing hints.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fitzroy Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sacred Heart School.
