I believe the two most important things tutors can do for their students is: to give detailed feedback on a student’s work, recognising their weaknesses and discussing the specific questions in detail, whilst congratulating the student on their correct answers; and to ensure that the student never feels ‘dumb’, leading to them feeling…

Give the student the tools needed for the problem, not the answer. This gives the student the satisfaction of finding the solution themselves, as well as building their confidence to go further. The ability to explain complex problems, break them down into small steps for the student to go through, as well as link the smaller steps so that the…

To me, the most important thing a tutor can do is to foster a supportive and positive learning environment. This is because it is important to create a safe and encouraging space where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and improvements. It is also important for the tutor to tailor the teaching approach to each individual…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is clearing all the doubts and most importantly understanding the difficulty and making it easy for them to understand. Also it is important for the tutor to make the subject fun for the student. My stranth is the ability to understand the students doubts and the ability to make the solution…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

Become students’ friends so you can lead the children to the book, most students don’t want study because the teacher is too strict and always pushing them, if the tutor can become their friends, they can lead the student to study voluntary. I’m patient enough to take care of a children’s work and I can spend more time with him or her to…

I believe that listening to the student is among the most important things a tutor can do. Having a good understanding of the student's optimal way of learning is also beneficial to the…

According to me the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instil confidence and positive mindset in a student which can empower the student to take on challenges. Developing a love for learning also goes a long way, as a tutor teaches a subject which he likes he can encourage curiosity and passion for the subject in his students…

I believe that making every session meaningful, productive but entertaining is key to learning. A tutor should make sure that the student is well-engaged in the session but still focussing on their weaknesses and strengths. A tutor should make a personalized learning experience for every student and build a relationship of trust with the student.…

I believe that a tutor should be able to build relationships with a student where the students are provided with an environment where they are heard and observed. I think this allows tutors to strategize methods in helping students progress, learn and succeed. This must be done with patience, constant assessment of student's progress, and…

After teaching a specific section, it is essential to question the student on the respective topics to understand whether the student understood the basic concept of the section I believe every student has a different capacity. It is important for a tutor to listen to a student and to learn what their strengths, struggles, and goals are. It is then important for a tutor to communicate in a clear and engaged manner, to ensure that material is described in an effective way. Tutors should also be open to all questions from students and should address these as much as…

A tutor can provide little tips and tricks to answering questions, especially in Math. Always be within reach, in terms of communication platforms, so that the student can clarify any doubts at any point in time. A tutor should also be flexible to the timings of the students yet not compromising on other students schedule. I am patient, clear…

In addition, it allows…

I believe that developing the learning capability of the student is the best thing a tutor can do because a tutor is only going to be there for a short run however their learning ability is going to assist and stick with them forever. I always make the students aware of what kind of questions can be asked while allowing them to take their time and…

Inside Flinders ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Jamie focused on algebra, practising the addition and subtraction of algebraic terms before moving on to expand and simplify brackets.

For Year 9, Chloe worked through trigonometry problems involving sine, cosine, and tangent ratios as well as solving worded questions using inverse trigonometric functions.

Meanwhile, Year 7 student Olivia completed measurement homework covering areas of combined shapes—including subtracting areas for hollow figures—using step-by-step problem breakdowns.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student working on surface area calculations often moved too quickly through steps, as noted: "While she is very fast in her working, sometimes she misses a step that is vital to the accuracy of the answer." This led to avoidable miscalculations, particularly with complex 3D shapes.

In Year 10 English, integrating quotes smoothly into sentences remained challenging; skipping this process weakened written arguments.

Meanwhile, a primary-level learner tackling multiplication struggled with higher numbers due to lapses in concentration—"he still gets confused while multiplying higher numbers"—resulting in unfinished problems and loss of confidence during practice.

Recent Achievements

One Flinders Park tutor noted a Year 10 student who used to hesitate when working with negative numbers, but now independently solves complex algebraic equations by breaking them into smaller steps.

In another session, a high schooler made noticeable progress in scientific writing—after struggling to express relationships in her practical report, she learned to incorporate advanced language and complete most of her data analysis without prompting.

Meanwhile, a primary student who initially confused area and perimeter is now confidently calculating both for different shapes and explains her reasoning out loud before starting each question.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Findon Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Flinders Park Primary School.
