I consider patience and dedication to be the most valuable qualities a tutor can provide. The student needs to feel supported in a learning environment to succeed, especially if it is a subject they aren't particularly strong at. As a former HSC student, I honestly felt the 'tough love' approach some tutors had would deter me from wanting to study…

I think the most important thing that a tutor can do is be supportive. Students are already frustrated when they do not understand something, hence we do not need to add to that by being frustrated at them. In addition, a tutor needs to be flexible. This allows one to better tailor the program to the student's needs and the student's strengths. I…

The most important thing that I can do as a tutor would be to make sure the kid understands everything that I teach. Each kid is different. Finding the right teaching style for that kid and teaching as such will make the kid more involved into the subject and makes learning fun. I am a very good observer and an active listener. I make sure I tend…

A tutor can make the student love to learn new things. A tutor can make life easier for a student by showing him/her that acquiring knowledge is very beneficial and important for prospering in life later on. I can explain my ideas in a really easy way. I am very patient as I can repeat the lesson several times until the student understands. I have…

I believe a tutor should always be reliable, punctual, patient, kind, and supportive - as this creates a safe learning environment for all students. I am newly graduated, meaning I still recall all the emotions and stresses of high school, and know the content and structure of various subjects extremely well. I excelled at my own school in English…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is aid them in being confident enough to always attempt a problem. A great tutor helps a student to put aside the "oh no, I don't know what to do" thought or feeling and and least try to break the problem into something they do know how to do. My strengths as a tutor come in my genuine passion…

I realised that the real challenge often isn't the students' abilities but their engagement with the content. My goal as a tutor is to approach material proactively, sparking curiosity and encouraging students to ask 'why?' and 'how?' instead of passively accepting information at face value. I believe in creating an environment where students feel…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to provide clarity, support, and encouragement. Tutoring is about building a relationship with the student based on trust and respect, making the student feel comfortable enough to ask questions, express their concerns and doubts, which was a key aspect for me when I was learning. A tutor needs to be patient and build a healthy learning curve. One of the most important things for a tutor is to be encouraging and positive. Negativity can lead to resentment towards a subject and deflect the student from making a genuine effort to learn. A tutor also needs to be well-versed with the material so they can teach the student as…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them the confidence and strategies to tackle problems even when you, as a tutor, are not there. A tutor's job is to build confidence and make learning feel rewarding. That starts with clear explanations, patient encouragement, and adapting to the student's pace. It also means modelling effective study habits and problem-solving strategies, so they can work independently. When students enjoy the process and trust their skills, their results…

Inside Forest LodgeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Blake worked on recognising fractions using the Fraction Run game and completed reading comprehension activities on Thunder and Lightning, as well as vertical algorithms for maths.

Year 8 focused on algebra with lessons covering adding and subtracting algebraic fractions, factorisation, and contextual problem solving using equations.

For Year 5, Aditi practised imaginative story writing by building a story arc in her short story "Turkey Head" and strengthened grammar skills through tense revision and vocabulary extension games.

Recent Challenges

A Year 4 student was reluctant to attempt persuasive writing, needing encouragement to start, and often hesitated with challenging maths reasoning tasks—"he doubted his ability and was slow to begin," noted a tutor.

In Year 7 maths, one student's distraction with online features like BitPaper tabs led to unfinished algorithms and interruptions in focus.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student tackling algebra sometimes avoided self-editing, leaving errors uncorrected and missing feedback opportunities.

For a senior (Year 11) preparing for exams, over-reliance on calculators slowed manual calculation speed during factorization drills; this made timed practice less effective and increased anxiety under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Forest Lodge noticed that a Year 9 student who used to procrastinate now attempts answers straight away, even when unsure—showing more initiative and less hesitation than before.

In another session, a Year 11 student who often struggled to focus was able to finish all their assigned homework without reminders and even asked for extra practice questions on topics they'd previously avoided.

For a younger learner in Year 4, using a visible "to-do" list helped him independently organise his tasks and move from one activity to the next with much less prompting than earlier sessions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glebe Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Forest Lodge Public School.
