Believing in your student has to be one of the most important things a tutor can do as you help the student know that nothing is impossible and they can do it all. I also think patience is also important as everyone learns differently and at various paces. I believe I am easy to communicate with. In terms of communicating with parents, my…

I believe that it is incredibly important for a tutor to inspire their student to achieve their very best in terms of their academics. I also believe that a tutor can act as a more relatable source of academic help instead of a teacher; a tutor can provide more in depth help outside the class room. I can sympathise with the students in terms of…

To teach a topic is to simplify it, make the students imagine and live in the topic by giving them real life examples and case studies. As a tutor I beleive in understanding student's perspective, I try to put myself in their shoes and consider all the possibilities. While preparing a topic I prepare as if the students know everything (which helps…

I believe a tutor play a great role in helping his/her student to build up self confidence. A tutor can help a student in identifying their strengths and weaknesses and work accordingly. 1. Customising the teaching methods as per the need of a student. 2. Dedicated individual focus. 3.…

To be inspired and motivated in this area, even though they might not go into this area, but at least to see the importance and be appreciate the stuff they learn. Inspiring and motivating: Most of my previous student starts to like math after I've tutored them for a while. I'm also adaptable and patient with…

In my current study, the most important skills are independent learning and peer teaching. I aim to teach students how to identify their gaps and where to look, whether Google or Youtube or books or teachers. I will teach students study skills like note taking or flashcard techniques. In the end, my goal will be to make the student the expert and…

I think that as a tutor, being able to understand the perspective of the student is crucial in educating them. Tutoring is a student-centred occupation and one should be able to assess students' knowledge in real time in order to develop effective teaching solutions. Another important tutoring technique is to be prepared for sessions. Whether it…

Be patient and understanding and realise that each student has different needs, and that the best way to help each student is to alter the tutoring experience to they needs. The most important thing a tutor can do for student is to encourage them to do their best, and help them develop a passion for the things they are learning so that they don't develop a resentment for school like many children do. I believe the most important role of a tutor is to create an environment where the student feels fully comfortable and confident. It’s crucial that they never hesitate to ask questions or admit when something isn’t clear. When students feel safe and supported, genuine learning can take place. After that, I think it’s about helping them…

A tutor can do a lot for a student. But I feel like the most important thing that can be done is to change the idea of a negative notion about a subject in the students mind. Attitude plays a key role in learning, and diminishing that fear, and giving the student confidence can really change their entire interest and perception about that certain…

A tutor should be able to and simplify a particular concept making it easier for a student to understand. I would like to answer this question from the student’s point of view. It’s not important for the tutor to know each and everything but what is important is that if the student is unable to understand a topic and the tutor is also not aware of it, it’s his/her responsibility to give that student the assurance that he/she will try to solve it…

Support them. Sometimes students just need that boost of confidence and support to understand. I believe tutoring helps students develop a genuine love for learning. There are 2 characteristics a tutor needs to achieve this. Firstly, the tutor should have an open and friendly personality. Learning is inherently effortful, and having someone friendly to guide the process makes it more enjoyable and productive. Additionally, tutors need to…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make them feel comfortable and create a positive environment. Inside Fortitude ValleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Adam worked on solving algebraic expressions with fractions and reviewed angle properties of parallel lines, as well as calculating the volume and surface area of cylinders and prisms.

In Year 10, Laila focused on understanding thermal conductivity and heat transfer types for a physics assignment, along with practicing natural logarithm graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Priscilla concentrated on designing a scale model of her school oval for maths, applying measurement concepts like scales, plans, and data collection to her project.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student left her school textbook at home and struggled to visualize angles in complex polygons, which slowed her problem-solving during geometry tasks.

In Year 11 Physics, unclear assignment instructions led to confusion—"the requirements for the physics assignment were too vague to understand," a tutor noted—which resulted in missed criteria and incomplete research before writing.

A Year 6 learner repeatedly forgot both homework and key materials, such as notebooks and flashcards, making it hard to review prior content or track progress.

Each of these scenarios meant valuable lesson time was spent retracing steps instead of advancing skills or building confidence.

Recent Achievements

A Fortitude Valley tutoring session saw one Year 11 student finally break through on worded bearing questions—last time, she struggled to set them up, but this week she worked through several independently and even tackled a tricky exam-style problem.

Another high schooler had previously rushed her assignments, but now she's pausing to ask clarifying questions aloud before starting and carefully checking each step; this shift has meant fewer errors in her homework.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who used to count slowly is now confidently using the "stairs method" for addition, finishing sums much more quickly than before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brisbane Square Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Angelorum College.
