I understand that blindly teaching could not help students in understanding, it is necessary to understand or feel their struggles too. As students could be shy or embarrassed to ask questions and the learning progress would stop by there, thus a tutor should show more care and patience to students. Especially for math, it is also important to…

The most important things for a tutor to do for a student is ensure their confidence stems from understanding not just knowing the answer to a question but instead the theory behind it. As said earlier, a tutor is not someone with a "rat-race" kind of approach to learning with zero engaging feats. The most important thing is being keen on motivation. Since I plan teaching students from a primary to higher level each level would require motivation in a very different way. For e.g. engaging primary level students with a minor…

Helping students understand the importance of learning is the main key. Students need to learn the importance of an educational journey. A tutor can make a student love the subject he/she hates. The most important thing for a tutor is to understand the student, his/her interests, aptitude, and what he/she is inclined towards. If you have a basic idea of the student mindset you can develop techniques to make them understand the subject in a way they don't find it hard. Gamification…

Inside GarranTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jamie worked on simplifying fractions and ratios, focusing on finding common factors and dividing across, and also practiced BODMAS for the correct order of operations.

In Year 10, Lily reviewed factorising and expanding quadratics, then explored graphing parabolas using Desmos to visualise their shapes.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Arjun continued differentiation techniques, including implicit differentiation and applying these skills to basic kinematics problems.

Recent Challenges

Time management was a significant challenge during exams for the Year 11 student; she spent too much effort on questions that she felt less confident in, which left less time for other sections.

In Year 9 algebra, skipping steps during equation solving hid sign errors and made it harder to spot where things went wrong.

A Year 6 student's homework was often incomplete or mostly incorrect but improved when completed with guidance. Distraction and talking sometimes interrupted focus during lessons, and in these moments, important methods were mixed up or forgotten under pressure.

Recent Achievements

One Garran tutor noticed a Year 9 student who had previously hesitated to attempt more challenging quadratics now choosing to work through them independently, even rearranging formulas and solving for unknowns without prompting.

In a senior session, another high schooler who once mixed up the steps in graphing parabolas was able to clearly plot graphs and accurately label all coordinates after some targeted practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 student—who used to count on their fingers for every addition—recently completed several complex sums mentally and corrected their own mistakes without being asked.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are very happy with Sean, the kids have responded very well to him and even look forward to the sessions!

Abed is passionate about maths, and is very keen to teach his student, and ensure they are succeeding. He is an asset to Ezymaths.

Things are going really well. Kai enjoys Noah's tutoring. On his last math's assessment he received 80% in comparison to the one before which was 55%. I met with his math's school teacher and she has provided upcoming topics for Noah to discuss with Kai as well as 2 practice tests. Her feedback was positive too and constructive. If we stay on this path, I'm confident that it will prepare him well for the upcoming HSC.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Woden Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Garran Primary School.
