Being able to communicate with them in a friendly way, and not making them feel intimidated. Having to understand what study method is the best for them. Relate. The student will understand the concept once it resonates with something the student is interested in. A tutor needs to describe the concept, demonstrate the concept and invite the student to attempt the concept. This open dialogue, dispelling fear of failure and welcoming the opportunity to learn is an important attribute an economics…

Give them confidence- either to have a crack at new questions or topics, or just continue to work and learn independently. Usually this is achieved by helping students find a way to enjoy the subject. I'm a good communicator and very empathetic. I've always been told I'd be an excellent teacher- my habit is to always make sure a tutee has…

The most important thing an economics tutor can do for a student is make them feel as if they have tried their absolute hardest and have done their best. A student should feel confident and empowered going into their next exam or assessment as they have acquired a new understanding of the subject. I think I have the patience to take my time with…

The main purpose of an economics tutor is to expand the tutee's tree of knowledge in a holistic manner. There is no point simply explaining the knowledge behind 1 leaf if it has nothing to hold on to, ie. the trunk and branches. If the leaf has nothing to hold on to then it will fall. So the tutors job is to find the best and most empathetic way…

Identifying the students' weaknesses is the most important. If you don't know their weaknesses, it would be difficult to target a specific area, which consequently makes the students unable to improve. I think a common misconception about an economics tutor's job is that their whole purpose is to get their tutee an A+. While this is obviously a wonderful side-effect of tutoring, the most important thing a tutor can do is to develop and improve a student's ability to problem-solve, learn, and work effectively to complete their academic goals. The…

Inside GeebungTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 12 student Jack focused on applying the first and second derivative tests to identify stationary points, including classifying them as minima, maxima, or points of inflection.

Year 11 student Emily practiced logarithmic addition and subtraction as well as multiplying using index laws, consolidating her understanding with worked examples.

Meanwhile, Year 5 student Ava worked on comparing fractions numerically and using diagrams for clearer understanding, along with building confidence in multiplication and division facts.

Recent Challenges

For a Year 10 student working on algebra, he skipped showing steps in equations, which hid sign errors—when these slips weren't caught by backchecking, small mistakes crept into otherwise solid work.

In Year 8 mathematics, forgetting to bring the correct workbook led to lost time reconstructing notes from memory instead of building new skills.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student sometimes juggled both an online textbook and offline workbook but struggled to keep track of where practice questions had been completed.

For one primary student tackling fractions, scattered classwork across multiple books made it tricky to review progress before tests.

Recent Achievements

In Geebung, a tutor observed that William, a Year 10 student, has started to slow down and talk through each maths problem aloud. This is a significant shift from earlier sessions where he would rush and make simple mistakes.

During a recent high school session, another student who previously hesitated to use new formulas was able to independently apply the equation given for differentiation until he understood it clearly.

For a younger learner, Callum has moved beyond just memorising times tables; now he prepares his own materials before each lesson and tackles unfamiliar multiplication problems without prompting.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are very happy with Darius' tutoring of John and would like the tutoring to continue.

Ayon has been a wonderful tutor for Connor and he now feels that he is coping very well with his journey into HSC. He has learnt a lot with his tutor and is now studying hard with a lot more understanding. I would like to thank you.

We are very happy with Michael and Caroline's confidence has already improved thanks to his support.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Chermside Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Kevin's School.
