Not give the answers but help support the learning process and give guidance when the child needs it most. There is a difference between doing all the work for the child and actually teaching how the problem can be approached and observing how the student does it him/herself. If the child is stuck on a concept, it is my responsibility to help the…

Listening to their needs and demonstrating openness will help a better understanding of their situation and where they lack behind. I am very flexible, approachable, and helpful. In…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them understand the course content- so they can pass assessment- and also to help them understand other aspects of the subject they need or want to understand, either for the sake of curiosity or because they have some use for it. It is best if this understanding is of a deep…

The best thing that a tutor can do for a student is not to regurgitate information - that can be found by reading a book, or browsing the internet; but to inspire. I believe that a perspective can be most powerfully shared by someone who has seen and understood, who can empathize with the struggles that are necessary to get to seeing the solution…

Whilst a tutor is only present with their student for a limited time, they can help by providing a clear understanding of what the syllabus wants and giving resources. They are also there to answer and clarify a student’s questions and assist in developing a structured work routine. Since I have recently completed the HSC and have studied the…

I opine that understanding the IQ and how to upgrade it is the key responsibility of a mentor. It is also imperative that a tutor should be patient if a child is not understanding a question and try to explore new ways to make it clear. I am very loving and patient as I know kids take time to understand the key concepts. Non-judgemental is the key…

A tutor can make the learning process easy and enjoyable. Tutor may provide a personalized learning experience, which can be better than what books can do. Tutor can attend to the concerns and weak areas of each student and help them to master difficult concepts. A tutor can guide the student for learning beyond the immediate subject requirements.…

I consider the most important attributes that a tutor can have for a student is the ability to listen, to be patient, and to be able to explain concepts and questions in more ways than one. Motivating them, something many students struggle with is the motivation to continue studying, not because they are lazy, but because of things in their life out of control. When you motivate and teach them and help them see progress from their efforts, it gives them back the drive they need to keep pushing forward My strength lies in connecting…

Local Reviews

My son understood exactly what Margaret taught him the other day, with which he was having a lot of problems with.
Rebecca, Georges Hall

Inside Georges HallTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Sam revised standard mathematics topics including surface area and indices, with targeted practice on algebraic equations.

Another Year 11, Mia, worked through questions involving simple and compound interest as well as methods for rearranging formulae to isolate a specific variable.

For primary support, Year 4 student Jay focused on maths concepts like interpreting time phrases and reading analogue clocks, alongside building his English vocabulary by creating word lists with definitions and example sentences.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, one student's written work was flagged as needing clearer presentation—brackets were often missed when multiplying negatives, which led to sign errors ("the presentation of answers needed improvement so as to be mathematically correct").

In Year 10 financial maths, a tendency emerged to attempt annuity problems before planning the approach, resulting in confusion about which formulas applied.

Meanwhile, a primary student found adding mixed numeral fractions difficult at first and hesitated to show working; only after guided practice did confidence grow.

In all cases, moments of hesitation or skipped steps made it harder to catch small mistakes early.

Recent Achievements

One Georges Hall tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to hesitate with complex algebra now working through factorisation and expansion questions right after a single demonstration, rarely needing extra help.

In Year 9, another student has begun asking clarifying questions when stuck—previously she would stay silent or guess—and recently solved percentage error and surface area problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, a younger student in primary school made a noticeable shift from struggling with decimals to answering decimal addition questions independently after just a few guided examples.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Chester Hill Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Georges River Grammar.
