I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make learning simple by building from a very strong foundation. The reason many students struggle with complex concepts is because their foundation is either weak or vague. My approach has always been to start with the basics, explain them in simple terms, and then gradually build…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are assisting them with their studies and provide comfort. I do not think tutors should spoon-feed answers to students as that will not help them fully understand and learn. Other than that, I believe the ability to comfort and reassure students is extremely important for tutors. I have met…

Being a tutor is about being genuine and sincere in teaching, and to realize that we play a major role in being a witness to the students' growth. Our job is to give a pathway for students to be engaged in the subject, give a reason to why they should learn it, and for them to accomplish great things in the future. Teach not only concepts but how…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is listen. Is there a way the student feels they learn better? Perhaps through pictures instead of words? Is the student not focussed and extremely tired? Would it be more productive to learn outside in the backyard or reschedule for another day? Students are young, but they are young adults.…

A tutor's primary role is to guide students toward independent learning by helping them develop a deep understanding of the material. This involves not just explaining concepts clearly but also fostering critical thinking skills, encouraging self-confidence, and providing strategies for problem-solving and time management. A tutor can change the approach of a student towards a subject- from pessimism to optimism, and make him/her excel in that subject. Understanding- so if a topic is not well understood by the student, I can explain again with a different approach so that the student understands the concept clearly. Patience- I am patient with weak/slow learners,…

First of all, teach and guide them. I understand that children know their academics, they just need a guide to show them the right way of approaching these questions. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is relate to them. Everyone is different and learns in a different way. Hence, you must adjust your method of teaching for each individual student. Some people are auditory, visual or written learners, some like algebra, calculus, or trigonometry. Moreover, if you are understanding of your…

Inside Glen HuntlyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Henry worked on converting mixed fractions to improper fractions and practiced adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions with different denominators.

In Year 8, Sarah focused on simplifying algebraic expressions and collecting like terms using practice questions from her textbook.

For Year 10, Michael tackled quadratic equations from past tests as well as set notation in its various forms, including finding minimum points of graphs through worked examples.

Recent Challenges

A Year 7 student struggled to keep track of negative signs when adding and subtracting fractions, with one tutor noting, "she needs to look at the signs in front of the term… then subtract or add accordingly."

In Year 10, forgetting to write units and not double-checking data led to errors in measurement and statistics questions.

A Year 11 student avoided attempting complex polynomial division without notes—hesitation here slowed progress during independent tasks.

Meanwhile, a senior student repeatedly skipped re-reading worded problems fully, missing key details and needing extra explanation before proceeding with calculus applications.

Recent Achievements

A Glen Huntly tutor noticed that a Year 11 student, Sienna, used to wait for hints before attempting tricky calculus problems, but in their latest session she worked through finding derivatives from first principles mostly on her own and asked targeted questions only when really stuck.

Meanwhile, Lily in Year 7 had previously struggled to spot mistakes in her test answers, but after some guided practice she now independently reviews her work and corrects errors without prompting.

In another recent session, Eve (Year 10) was able to solve exponential equations that had caused trouble in earlier homework attempts and finished the whole set without needing step-by-step guidance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Carnegie Library and Community Centre—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glen Eira College.
