The most important qualities are patience and compassion. When a tutor is knowledgeable about the subject and shows understanding towards students who are struggling, those students will feel safe and be more open to learning. I provide examples to clarify concepts, and I'm willing to explain the same material multiple times until my students…

The most important is to be there and present when students are struggling. To be observe the weaknesses of each students and provide ways of improvement. Be compassionate and patient, ask students if they have understood that particular concept. I'm good listener, ensuring that students are comfortable to tell me when they are unaware of certain…

A tutor can tailor instruction to meet the specific needs, learning style, and pace of the student. Moreover, students can help students understand complex concepts by providing clear explanations, examples, and demonstrations. Additionally, a tutor can assess the student's strengths and weaknesses in a subject and use this assessment to create…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to identify their strengths and areas of improvement in particular to improve the student's overall performance in a particular subject area. Thus, I believe it is really important to enable the student to feel empowered about their learning through support and encouragement. This…

I believe one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a safe, encouraging space where students feel confident to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow. It’s not just about helping them understand the content, it’s also about building their self-belief and showing them that they "can" succeed. A good tutor should also adapt their…

A tutor should create a safe space for a student so that he/she can reach out whenever needed. Through this, a student will feel more comfortable in his/her studies and will acquire more confidence since they will have the opportunity to be more inquisitive. They will be more eager to learn and explore. My biggest strength as a tutor is patience.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to put in time. They need to act as if it's not just a job which pays. Prepping lessons early, helping with questions outside of tutoring time, marking tests. All of these examples show a great tutor. - I put a lot of care into my work. - I love seeing others thrive through my help. - I…

As a tutor, it is very important that the teacher becomes an inspiration to the student. The passion with which the tutor teaches the student matters a lot and this also influences the students influence on the subject. I think a tutor should be able to tell if their student understands something or not, often they don't say it outright and asking them directly might not get them to admit it. So by asking them to solve a question that indirectly uses the concept might help us figure out if they're having trouble or not. Students should also feel comfortable with…

In my opinion, I think that it is important to understand every student is different and has their way of learning. It is important for a tutor to identify and tailor a plan for each student so that they are learning efficiently. For example, as I am a visual and auditory learner, I learn most efficiently by watching lectures and videos and less…

I believe the most important thing here would be to ensure the student understands what is being taught and is able to move forward in their learning. Tutors as facilitators must be able to give them the confidence that they are improving and can do even better with persistent practice and revision. I think one of my greatest strengths is being…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to open a rapport that makes them feel safe and understood, an environment where they are not afraid to try and even not afraid to fail, in the knowledge that with help and direction they can try again and do better. I think the most important thing is making the student feel comfortable asking questions. A tutor should focus on understanding where the student is getting stuck and help them build confidence, not just give answers. I'm patient and I don't rush students. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

Inside Glen OsmondTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 Lucy worked on reviewing index laws and practiced converting fractional indices to surds, as well as multiplying and dividing fractions.

In Year 10, Maja focused on linear relations by exploring the equation y = mx + c, finding gradients and intercepts, and then moved onto graphing these functions.

For Year 11 Chemistry and Maths, Divyanshu tackled naming organic compounds with carboxyl, carbonyl, and hydroxyl groups in chemistry, while in maths he learned how to derive e^x and e^f(x) using differentiation rules.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 Chemistry student had difficulty recalling key chemical equations during test revision, especially for ocean acidification and exoskeleton formation—"memorising the specific reactions was a sticking point," noted one tutor.

In Year 11 Maths, skipping steps when differentiating under time pressure led to persistent sign errors, particularly with chain rule and kinematics problems.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student often struggled to translate worded maths problems into equations; the first step alone felt overwhelming.

For English in Year 10, reliance on copying large slabs of quotes rather than synthesising ideas slowed essay progress and limited original analysis.

Recent Achievements

A Glen Osmond tutoring session saw a Year 12 student who had struggled to organise his chemistry answers now confidently providing concise, accurate explanations about spectroscopy and logarithmic rules without prompting.

Another tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 9 English student: where he once barely wrote at all, last week he completed a full-length essay independently and even scored an A on his first assignment.

In Year 6 maths, one student who used to avoid challenging problems is now attempting fraction factorisation exercises without hesitation and recently managed to factorise equations like 8x+4 on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fullarton Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Seymour College.
