I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire confidence in the student. It's not just about teaching concepts, but helping the student believe in their own ability to understand and apply them. A good tutor should adapt their methods to suit each students learning style, making lessons clear, engaging, and enjoyable. It's also…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be there for the student. Unlike a teacher, the tutor has the luxury of being able to pace shift, and cater to the individual. Thus, taking absolute advantage of this 'power' is of the utmost importance, making sure that you, as a tutor, are meeting the needs of your student. I believe my strengths are…

Ultimately, a tutor should aim to foster independence in students, empowering them to become self-directed learners who can take ownership of their education beyond the tutoring sessions. This includes teaching study skills, time management, and organizational strategies that can help students become more independent and successful learners. I can…

Some of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is ensuring that the student knows the content that has been taught. Also make sure that you are listening to the student and try to minimise their weaknesses and maximise their strengths. As a tutor, my strengths are being confident and only speaking what I know of. As a tutor, you can\'t approach each student as if they are the same person learning the same subject. Each individual has different weaknesses and strengths. For a tutor to recognise this fact is detrimental to ensuring the tutor can target each student\'s weaknesses effectively instead of wasting time. Having been a student myself, I know time…

Above all else, I think a tutor can give a student confidence in whatever work students have due. Once their confidence is built up, they will respond better to not just tutoring outside, but also teaching in the classroom and result to a deeper understanding of the content. I think I am well versed in most subjects, and am an excellent…

The capacity to communicate in such a way that the learner feels driven, excited, and confident in their ability to master and enjoy whatever challenges come along is one of the most crucial personal attributes of a competent instructor. A trait I consider to be very important as a tutor is being a good leader. They should be very responsible for their actions, meaning that they will ensure each tutoring session is effective for the student. They should also be assertive, trustworthy and mindful, which helps them offer guidance to other students. Lastly, they should keep an open…

I think patience is undeniably one of the most important trait a tutor can have. Apart from patience, adaptability to each student's learning requirement and having a solid foundation on the topic is equally important. A tutor should be selfless and try as much as possible to help the student in their understanding. It is also important to look…

I would say a tutors' ultimate goal would be to get in sync with the way the student is taught in their respective schools, colleges or universities. Additionally, it is extremely important to make friends with the students, as this is necessary for proper engagement. I am not afraid to do some research when it comes to getting a student to…

Local Reviews

Thanh has increased my daughter's confidence in her maths ability. She has a no nonsense but fun approach that keeps a teenager positive about continuing tutoring. My daughter likes that Thanh has different methods of teaching concepts that make more sense to her. And best of all she is positive about my daughters progress.

Inside Glen WaverleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Kye worked on long multiplication with two- and three-digit numbers (including zeroes) and was introduced to division using visual strategies.

Year 7 student Elle focused on probability concepts, tackling practice questions involving multiple events and converting fractions to decimals as part of test preparation.

For Year 8, revision for Kye included rearranging algebraic equations and reviewing fundamental skills in bracket multiplication, helping consolidate methods for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student struggled to bring past tests for review, which meant missed chances to clarify recurring mistakes—"he couldn't check which algebra steps were lost in the test."

In Year 8 maths, forgetting to attempt set homework limited practice with foundational topics like BEDMAS and basic equations.

One Year 6 student often tried questions in their head without showing working; this hid errors when tackling area problems.

Across both junior and senior years, not recording confusing questions during school videos led to gaps that lingered into lessons.

Without these process tweaks, confusion quietly accumulates between sessions.

Recent Achievements

A Glen Waverley tutor noticed some great changes lately. Kye, a high school student, recently brought home his data test with 93%—a big leap after earlier trouble remembering statistics concepts, and he now checks his notes to solve new problems without prompting.

Elle, also in high school, picked up algebraic angle questions much faster than before; she's started explaining her working out aloud rather than guessing quietly.

Meanwhile, Trishelle (primary) has begun completing all her homework each week on her own initiative and points out exactly which maths areas still worry her before starting new tasks.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glen Waverley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glen Waverley Secondary College.
