In my opinion, a tutor is able to change the perspective of a student towards a particular subject completely. It is true that in the end, it's the student's effort that makes them perform well but on the other hand, a tutor can make the student put in the effort, and make the student enjoy what he is studying. I know that I can get through to…

Tutors should be a friendly guiding figure that the student feels that they can approach at any time for assistance. As a tutor, the best thing that I can give to a student is the confidence for them to feel that they can achieve greater and better things. A tutor can also inspire a student to be like them, a positive role model that helps shape…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are 1. to develop the interests in learning, such as changing the dull mathematics class into interesting storytelling games. 2. To provide useful problem-solving tips that students can easily pick up and apply. 3. Continuously give students sense of achievements by helping them…

1. A tutor should understand the different needs of different students and find a way of teaching that best suits them. So preparing suitable material for different students are very important. 2. Never teach to the test. It not only diminishes the student’s interest in the subject but also prevents them from developing further understanding…

Show that they care. A student may fall in love with the subject if they find that the tutor is passionate about the subject and is focused on getting the best out of the student. The best thing a tutor can do for a student is to understand the student's academic needs and address them in a very professional way. Most of the times, teachers and tutors don't listen to the problems of the individuals in their class and hence those problems often remain unsolved. Tutors must be able to adapt themselves to every student that they work with. Since there is no universal formula, your approach must depend on the student’s individual need and the particular difficulties he or she experiences. Every student is different, and not all of them will grasp a concept easily or learn quickly. It is also most likely…

Most important thing would be empathy. A tutor has to put himself/herself in the shoes of the student. Knowing the material in great detail is half the battle won. You also need to have patience and cannot expect all students to have the same speed in learning things. It takes time to build concepts. Brick by brick. You cannot build a wall in one…

The most important things are to build confidence, teach the student how to learn, and create a space where mistakes are treated as part of growth. Local Reviews

Thanh has increased my daughter's confidence in her maths ability. She has a no nonsense but fun approach that keeps a teenager positive about continuing tutoring. My daughter likes that Thanh has different methods of teaching concepts that make more sense to her. And best of all she is positive about my daughters progress.

Inside Glen WaverleyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Kye worked on long multiplication with two- and three-digit numbers (including zeroes) and was introduced to division using visual strategies.

Year 7 student Elle focused on probability concepts, tackling practice questions involving multiple events and converting fractions to decimals as part of test preparation.

For Year 8, revision for Kye included rearranging algebraic equations and reviewing fundamental skills in bracket multiplication, helping consolidate methods for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student struggled to bring past tests for review, which meant missed chances to clarify recurring mistakes—"he couldn't check which algebra steps were lost in the test."

In Year 8 maths, forgetting to attempt set homework limited practice with foundational topics like BEDMAS and basic equations.

One Year 6 student often tried questions in their head without showing working; this hid errors when tackling area problems.

Across both junior and senior years, not recording confusing questions during school videos led to gaps that lingered into lessons.

Without these process tweaks, confusion quietly accumulates between sessions.

Recent Achievements

A Glen Waverley tutor noticed some great changes lately. Kye, a high school student, recently brought home his data test with 93%—a big leap after earlier trouble remembering statistics concepts, and he now checks his notes to solve new problems without prompting.

Elle, also in high school, picked up algebraic angle questions much faster than before; she's started explaining her working out aloud rather than guessing quietly.

Meanwhile, Trishelle (primary) has begun completing all her homework each week on her own initiative and points out exactly which maths areas still worry her before starting new tasks.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glen Waverley Branch Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glen Waverley Secondary College.
