I believe the most important thing for a tutor to do for a student to not only to help them with their but also strive to instill the skills, like self motivation, healthy study habits, to continue succeed with their work. By instilling theses skill and habits the student can then move forward through higher education or an apprenticeship…

First of all, a tutor needs to build the teacher-student relationship in order to build trust and comfort in the learning space. A tutor should never see a student as weak, but rather, should see a student as progressive. A tutor should encourage and properly guide the student to better comprehend concepts in the subject being taught. A tutor…

Additionally, promote analytical thinking and problem-solving skills rather than just memorisation of facts. And finally, offer emotional support and encouragement, helping students manage stress and…

Aside from obtaining better grades, helping my students build their confidence in the subjects they are learning is also very crucial. The first and foremost thing a tutor should do is to create interest in the subject that is being taught. The reason is simple, when the student is interested in learning the subject, a teacher's job is a cakewalk. A teacher should make the student believe that subjects like maths are pretty easy and interesting to learn. This can be done by…

- A tutor can change their way of thinking towards some subjects. For instance, during their school class, they might think the subject is boring. But if tutor, teach them in a way to make it more fun and interesting then they like and start to grasp the knowledge quickly. - So the tutor can change their perception and eventually guide them to…

I think an essential thing a tutor can do for their student is be empathetic! Often, for teachers, its hard to understand what students are feeling, since school and lifestyle has changed from the time they were students to now (in a global pandemic). Therefore, being an tutor who displays empathy about understanding what its like being a student…

For me the most important thing a tutor can do is to guide the student in such a way that at the end of it, the student is able to lead by himself in the direction he was originally intended to go. It is similar to the lines of giving a man a fish to teaching him to fish. The tutor has to ignite the spark of interest in the student so that the…

I think tutors should be understanding to help them in the best way that they can, like being there for your students, not as a crutch but as someone who can amplify their learning. Inside GlenelgTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Finn practiced division and multiplication with decimals and fractions, as well as tackling a variety of word problems from a worksheet.

In Year 10, James focused on understanding sampling distributions and calculating confidence intervals for means, plus explored the structure of atomic nuclei in physics—covering isotopes, nuclear reactions, mass defect, and energy equivalence.

For Year 12, Una worked through practice questions on simple and compound interest alongside capital gains tax calculations in maths, while also reviewing key chemistry concepts like atomic theory and mole calculations ahead of an exam.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Chemistry, one student struggled to confidently recall technical terms and explain key concepts, as noted: "she was able to explain answers but could not give the correct term." This made it difficult to fully answer test questions or engage in class discussion.

In Year 12 Maths, a student often left questions blank rather than attempting an answer when unsure, which limited feedback opportunities.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student forgot her maths booklet at home, disrupting the session's flow and slowing progress on new topics. These moments reveal how process gaps can disrupt learning even when content is understood.

Recent Achievements

One Glenelg tutor noticed real progress with a Year 9 student, Una, who recently started identifying and correcting her own miscalculations in chemistry without prompting—a shift from earlier sessions where she'd wait for hints.

In another high school session, Chloe managed to solve ratio problems independently after previously needing step-by-step support on similar tasks.

Meanwhile, in primary years, Mavis showed new initiative by reading comprehension texts aloud voluntarily and tackling unfamiliar words head-on instead of skipping them. She wrapped up the session by coming up with extra research questions to investigate next time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glenelg Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Mary's Memorial School.
