The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to adapt to the student's learning method and help them prosper in their desired subject. Adaptability is the most important skill to have as a tutor; providing this skill to my students will help them feel at ease when learning concepts. I would consider being able to keep calm and patient for the student an absolute necessity as a tutor. As well as, being able to keep the student determined and positive if faced with a few hurdles along the way. As a tutor I believe my strengths are being able to read the student and understanding whether it's working, or if another approach is…

The most important thing for a tutor is to be actively listening; a tutor should respond to the student since tutoring differs from general teaching by way of individuality. The most important thing a tutor can do is firstly, giving a very comfortable environment where student can use his brain to its full extent. For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help students stop fearing what they don’t know. Once that fear is gone, they can focus on real learning instead of just chasing marks. A tutor’s role is to guide them to see mistakes as part of the process, build their confidence, and make knowledge something they’re curious about rather…

Inside Glenelg EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Finn worked on profit and loss, focusing on calculating percentage profit and loss in word problems, as well as applying ratios and proportions to real-life assignments.

Year 8 student James revised statistics topics including mean, median, mode, and also explored circular motion with a focus on understanding centripetal force using quick revision activities.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Alex practiced converting metric units for length, mass, and capacity alongside estimating and measuring area using standard units.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3, missing or incomplete recall of multiplication tables and number facts slowed progress with division and mixed operations; "Zion needs to memorize the timestable up to 8 to consolidate what have we covered in the lesson."

Messy or inconsistent labelling on place value boards caused confusion when working between decimals and whole numbers.

In a Year 10 Physics session, over-reliance on notes for trigonometric values and integration formulas meant slower problem-solving—especially under exam conditions.

A Year 12 student was observed mixing up formulas for derivatives and antiderivatives, which led to repeated errors despite practice.

In each case, lack of secure recall forced frequent pauses mid-task.

Recent Achievements

One Glenelg East tutor noticed that a Year 9 student, after previously needing guidance on assignments, recently attempted and solved most questions in two maths assignments independently for the first time.

In a high school session, Chloe began tackling ratio problems by herself—last month she needed step-by-step help but now solves several unaided during lessons.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once hesitated to read aloud is now bringing books from home to share spelling lists and short writing pieces with the tutor, clearly taking more initiative in reading tasks than before.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

I just got back from the US this morning we are very happy with Rhett and Connor has really clicked with him and his teaching methods. Under Rhetts tutoring Connor managed to go from a fail to a C+ 65% on his resit after only two sessions with Rhett so a great achievement if we had the ability to have more sessions with Rhett we would happily take them.

So far Katie has been prompt, personable and prepared. As you say it is very early days -we are only just getting to the point where we are clear on where she is at and where she needs to be.

Yes we are happy with Kavindu. Emily seems more confident with one on one home tutoring than class tutoring. thanks

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Glenelg Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glenelg Primary School.
