At a foundational level, it's most important to ensure the student feels confident with the material they're learning. As a first step, it's important for a tutor to assist in honing in and helping the student practice so that their skill level matches the basic requirements of the subject. Then the next most important thing a tutor can do for a…

The most important things one can do for a student is to encourage, to have empathy and to believe. To encourage is essential as one must never give up, no matter how hard the task at hand seems to be. Inside GlenroyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Mia focused on linear equations and simultaneous equations, including tackling worded problems step-by-step.

Year 10 student Daniel practiced structuring and writing oral presentations in preparation for an upcoming assessment, using example prompts to build confidence.

For primary support, Year 4 student Emily worked through addition and subtraction with four-digit numbers as well as identifying and describing 3-D shapes, using diagrams to reinforce understanding.

Recent Challenges

Incomplete homework was a recurring issue in both upper primary and high school students.

For example, one Year 7 student repeatedly left English essays unfinished despite a signed contract—this resulted in missed opportunities for feedback and impacted his spelling test performance, as "most of the spelling words are taken from his homework."

In senior years, a student preparing for public speaking assignments neglected to complete assigned drafts, leading to less confidence during oral presentations.

A Year 6 maths student's messy layout—"he struggled aligning sums, which caused mistakes"—meant extra time spent correcting basic errors instead of advancing to more complex problems.

Recent Achievements

A Glenroy tutor recently noticed a Year 9 student who used to hesitate when tackling worded maths problems now confidently translates them into equations and solves them with much less prompting.

In Year 7 English, one student who previously struggled with structuring essays has begun planning their arguments independently and linking ideas between class and tutoring sessions.

Meanwhile, a younger student in Year 4 was initially hard on himself for spelling errors but is now more accepting of mistakes during tests, showing resilience by quickly moving on and finishing all questions without dwelling on previous slip-ups.
