The most important thing a tutor can do to a student is make student believe that student can learn and reach proper solution. Every one has the potential to learn things so, once a student starts believing in himself/herself studying starts to become fun. I as a tutor hardly give up on my students. I can only be satisfied and feel peaceful once I…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with "methods" of learning instead of explain the concepts as they are. Because with methods, students can apply the methods elsewhere. Another thing is to teach students how to "become" a tutor as well. Because this is the way I learn difficult subjects. I imagine…

I think one is being able to guide the student in his/her learning. Equally important is to be able to acknowledge the student's unique style of learning and use that to develop strategies to make learning easy and fun for the student. I think that I am able to simplify complex concepts and be able to create a strategic step-by-step approach in…

As a tutor I would help the student to bring out his or hers ideas through learning. Those ideas can make a huge difference in the society. I consider the two most important things for a tutor to do are to first inspire confidence in the student and identify the area of difficulty as precisely as possible. Students are generally not equipped to identify the precise area of their difficulty as they don't have the knowledge to fully place it in the context of the subject. By…

The most important part of being a tutor is being friendly and available so students feel comfortable asking questions about what they find difficult. I believe that a tutor should make the subject easy for the students to understand as each students learn in different ways. If a tutor is able to identify them and be able to make the student understand the subject then it is the best thing a tutor can do to help a student thrive. Every student can find possibly any knowledge available by using Google, but…

The most important thing that any tutor can do for a student is to be a good listener. Knowing a student's expectations is really important in planning effective tutoring techniques. Firstly, a tutor can give guiding questions instead of displaying the answers straightaway. This way, the students can be prompted to think of a way to get to the solution. Secondly, I believe a tutor should build the foundation first before going deeper into the subject. I am a patient person. I would give time for the students to digest the…

Inside GlenungaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Louis practised subtraction and worked on understanding the concept of times tables, focusing especially on the 2s, using hands-on activities to reinforce learning.

Year 10 student Maja tackled financial maths by working through worded problems involving discounts and percentage increases in preparation for an upcoming test.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sam reviewed calculus concepts such as derivatives and addressed previous challenges with logarithms by applying these skills to more complex questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly left working out of algebra solutions, admitting, "I just get lazy when writing and choose the easier route," which made it harder to catch errors with negatives.

In Year 11 English, a student's essay drafts showed persistent run-on sentences—despite being able to identify them aloud, he struggled to fix them independently on his iPad.

A Year 9 student relied heavily on quoting large slabs of text in history assignments rather than summarising ideas in his own words.

In Year 7 maths, times tables gaps led to slow progress solving fraction problems and meant more time spent counting than reasoning through new concepts.

Recent Achievements

One Glenunga tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 9 student who previously struggled to write at length; last week, he completed an entire essay independently, something he'd never managed before.

In senior maths, a high schooler who used to hesitate with statistics scored 85 on his most recent assessment—well above his previous result—and has begun setting personal targets for the next exam.

Meanwhile, a younger student who often guessed quietly when stuck now openly asks for help and explains her thinking during problem-solving tasks. She finished all her addition questions without needing prompts this session.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Fullarton Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Glenunga International High School.
