the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure that the concept they have taught is clearly understood. One wrongly interpreted concept, especially in maths can be a huge hindrance in understanding other concepts in higher grades. Thus solving all the questions that students have with clarity is the tutor's biggest…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build their confidence, make them feel comfortable and create a positive environment. In my childhood, I was taught "a good teacher is someone who makes a student fall in love with the subject" and the idea has always been in me. I try to follow that ideology by making leaning…

The tutor can find a common wavelength and understand the student's way of grasping. Every student has a different way of learning and perceive stuff. i find out different ways to solve one question. I am a logical person, and would only start teaching if I am sure about the answer. My patience level is high, I used to teach my younger sister and…

I believe that the best thing a tutor can do is to help students be more self-sufficient in their future learning. It is important for students to develop skills transferrable across topics and subjects in the process of learning and revising new concepts. My strength as a tutor is my ability to accomodate to students' needs. I am always willing…

Beyond the learning of a specific subject, which may appear to be the main goal of tutoring to some, the most important things I believe a tutor can do for a student is to offer an enjoyable experience of learning. The school system can be difficult and it can be easy for students to lose motivation and interest in learning. A tutor can provide…

A tutor provides a supportive environment for their students. This is most true for the students who struggle the most, who may need more help than their peers who don't find the topic as difficult. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure a student can fully understand topics that have previously been difficult. I do not think it is not enough for a tutor to simply talk through the topic with the student and expect them to understand it. A tutor should explain the topic to the student and then, after more study…

Teach student life. Being kind human is better than an arrogant genius. I look up to my mentors, who not only taught me skills, but also gave me their thoughts and their experience. I think the most important thing a tutor can do is provide an opportunity for the student to thrive. To establish belief in them, as typically students seek out tutoring as they believe they are not 'good' at a subject. Being the one person there that cheers them on is a powerful thing. A tutor should be able to provide lessons to a student which are tailored to their abilities and learning style. This is something which students can't always get in their regular classes and a tutor could provide through being attentive. They should also be able to make students feel confident in their abilities and iron out any weaknesses. My…

The most important thing you can do for a student as a tutor is to give them the space the communicate. I think that in learning anything, you need to have an understanding of where others are coming from to be able to identify where they differ. I believe that themost important thing a tutor can do for a student is to pass on tips and tricks from their schooling experience rather than just hand out textbook knowledge - anyone can do that. Little tips and tricks as well as talks about future plans are going to help students more in the long run as well as teach them niche studying habits…

Inside GreenslopesTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Caleb explored chance and probability scenarios, along with basic arithmetic calculations.

Year 8 student Paul tackled algebraic expressions, measurement problems, geometry concepts, and probability through school test revision.

For Year 10, Ruby focused on quadratic equations—finding turning points and axes of symmetry by completing the square—and practiced using intercepts to determine the equation of a quadratic from its graph.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student often left algebra steps incomplete—skipped showing working when simplifying expressions, as noted—making it difficult to spot and correct sign errors.

In senior maths, one Year 11 student's graph work was held back by unclear layout: axis scales were inconsistently marked, leading to confusion about gradients.

A Year 10 student preparing an essay hesitated to write full sentences for ideas, worried they "weren't perfect yet," which slowed progress and limited drafting practice.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 learner sometimes relied on counting by hand instead of memorizing basic addition facts, making multi-step calculations much slower during class activities.

Recent Achievements

A Greenslopes tutor recently noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who started independently detecting and correcting her own mistakes in algebra, after previously needing step-by-step guidance.

In a senior English session, another high schooler was able to restructure her essay based on feedback—something she'd hesitated to do before—which made her arguments much clearer and stronger.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who had struggled to stay focused managed to complete all his decimal addition questions correctly and worked with much more concentration than usual. The session wrapped up as he answered every problem without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Stones Corner Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Greenslopes State School.
