I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to help them develop a study routine and to teach them how to study efficiently. This will allow the student to develop a sense of independence and help them organise their time properly, and as a result of being well organised I believe it will help the student to feel more…

A tutor should support the student as much as possible throughout their education. If the student is struggling with stress or work loads, I will help the student mentally and academically at all times. I will ensure the student understands every concept by providing practice papers and answering questions outside of tutoring session times as well…

I believe the best thing a tutor can do is to inspire confidence and a deep appreciation for lifelong learning in the student. While many students will not utilise the specific knowledge they learnt within a certain HSC subject later on, the ability to know how to learn; how to structure a study timetable, how to find a work-life balance, are all…

Be patient. Tutors cannot expect students to understand or get the question right the first time. It is important for tutors to understand where the student went wrong and to slowly and easily correct them by following the question. Once they grasped an understanding, tutors should give the student similar questions to practice so they are…

A tutor should be able to instill skills that will serve the students so well, both in academics and in life that they will no longer require help from us. A tutor is a guide to show the right path. Students might stumble a lot, but tutor should hold him up, stand by him and show the right direction. Never giving up on a student, looking for opportunities to advance their skill is what a tutor should always do. I try to explain things from the student's perspective. For example, a gamer might…

To expose someone to a subject in a manner that is encouraging and complete. There are many people who were irresponsibly exposed to subjects as rigorous as computer science and mathematics, as a consequence of which they start to believe that the subject is impossible, which with the little experience I have, I have never found to be the case. I think that taking the time to really understand the student's needs and being able to break down the problem into its smallest components really helps to understand exactly where the student is going wrong, and how to help them. I think a tutor should empower students to think for themselves, as this is what is required for the student to succeed independently when taking exams. So the most important thing I could do as a tutor is to encourage students to work out answers rather than giving it to them immediately. I pride myself on being patient. I believe strongly that…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to provide a strong foundation of understanding for all subjects and concepts. I think my biggest…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire a student to love what they are studying and enjoy the experience of learning. Excellence will surely follow after. Inside GreenwichTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Adrian revised **fractions** for an upcoming test, including multiplying and adding/subtracting fractions, and was introduced to Pythagoras' theorem through practice questions.

In Year 9, Mia worked on **trigonometry by applying SOH CAH TOA** to find missing sides and angles in triangles, then moved on to quadratic trinomials using factorisation techniques for both monic and non-monic cases.

For Year 10, Lucas focused on **parabolas—finding x- and y-intercepts, axis of symmetry, and the vertex**—as well as tackling trig application questions involving bearings and non-right-angle triangles.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 Maths, one student showed strong conceptual understanding but often avoided writing out all steps in algebra and trigonometry problems. As a tutor noted, "she needs more encouragement to write down whole thinking process—don't skip steps in working as some small mistakes were made."

In Year 7 English, another student struggled with motivation and rarely engaged during lessons; this meant new techniques for poetry analysis weren't retained.

A Year 6 student's fraction work revealed confusion between proper and improper fractions, which persisted due to missing homework practice.

When confidence dipped after setbacks, revision tended to focus only on easier questions already mastered.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Greenwich recently saw Abi, a Year 11 student, arrive at her session with a list of questions she'd struggled with—showing new initiative and clear self-awareness that wasn't there before.

Josie, another high schooler, used to hesitate when faced with simultaneous equations but now confidently solves them using both the substitution and elimination methods after focused practice.

Meanwhile, Imogen in primary school has made tangible gains: she went back to previously tricky maths problems last week and solved them independently this time around, remembering each step without prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Greenwich Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Greenwich Public School.
