In my opinion, the most valuable thing that a tutor can do for the student is to bring his/her interest to learn about anything in academic subjects. Most of the students nowadays are more keen on social media postings and playing online games. Sometimes, they forgot how important the academic knowledge in their lives. So, bring back the student's…

successfully creating a familiar and fun learning environment for students is the most critical and most important task at the same time for a tutor. This is the most important consideration. I believe that any fundamentals of science and mathematics can be easily understood if they are taught with practical and real life examples. So I always…

I think a tutor should have at least some level of personal connection with the student. A tutor should always motivate students to try their hardest, and also engage them into the subject as much possible. The ability to understand, to some extent at least whether the student has understood that paricular concept or…

Understanding and adapting according to each student is one of the most important thing in teaching. Each student is different, so tutor should adapt different teaching methods for each student. I feel that understanding the student's moods and learning styles is very important for a tutor to teach effectively. A tutor should be able to provide confidence to the learner and be flexible in personalizing the support that they offer to the students/learners. I am resilient and adaptable. I believe the most important thing a tutor/teacher can do for their students is to help them discover their true potential, eradicate doubt and hone their abilities in what may otherwise seem an impossible task. From my perspective, tutors should check for understanding as students go and constantly build confidence so that they feel like their abilities are improving. When they feel confident, wonderful things begin to happen. Also, tutors can be an exceptional asset to a family if they are committed and caring. They should relieve the stress that…

I would first try to understand what’s causing the struggle—whether it’s a gap in knowledge, a lack of confidence, or simply feeling overwhelmed. Then, I’d adjust my approach, maybe by revisiting the basics, using different examples, or setting small, achievable goals. I’d also encourage them by highlighting their progress so they feel…

It's very important for tutors to teach using methods which suit each unique student's preferred learning style. Tutors should be approachable to encourage students to ask questions as many times as they need to fully understand a topic. Most importantly, tutors should support their student's learning and promote a positive attitude towards…

I think being more practical, by being more open. By explaining problems with examples of real life, with things they already know and have seen. I think helping them with the home work related problems and also giving them a problem or two to solve from the teaching of the day. Simple things like repetitive recalling and revising can also do…

Reliable and good quality tutor a little expensive though
Vic Caplikas, Greystanes

Inside GreystanesTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Josh practiced multiplication and division skills, as well as NAPLAN reading and grammar tasks.

In Year 10, Sarah focused on expanding quadratic equations using perfect square and difference of two squares methods, and reviewed schoolwork on taxable income calculations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student David tackled compound interest problems by identifying variables within the formula and worked through a range of practice questions to prepare for an upcoming test.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, one student avoided showing algebraic working when substituting values into y = mx + b; as a tutor noted, "he went straight to answers, so mistakes in signs weren't visible until the end." This made it harder to spot where errors crept in and slowed progress with intercepts.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 chemistry student hesitated to attempt longer exam responses on ionic compounds, often leaving questions incomplete rather than structuring partial answers.

In Year 5 maths, reluctance to write out working for multiplication algorithms led to confusion when checking steps.

Each scenario left students less confident during revision and more reliant on last-minute guesswork.

Recent Achievements

One Greystanes tutor noted a Year 11 student who previously hesitated with indices and surds now answering those questions independently, needing far less guidance.

A high schooler working on compound interest has shifted from confusion to accurately solving for any variable in the formula, even attempting harder scenarios without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who often guessed during worded maths problems is now breaking them down step by step and writing out their reasoning before solving.

In one session, this younger student finished all ten worded multiplication problems with her written steps clearly shown.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Greystanes Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Holroyd High School.
