I truely believe that the most important thing as a tutor is being there for your students. You not only have to give your best to help them you should also be a person of trust for them. In a lot of situations those students have problems beyond the school like in private life so that affects their grades. By just talking with them personally and…

I feel the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to create an environment in which the student can feel safe to question what is being discussed and openly communicate lack of understanding and vulnerability. In my opinion, the worst thing a mentor can do is to appear unapproachable. When I was in this position, my mentor was very…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them feel capable and supported. Many students who seek tutoring already experience self-doubt or frustration because they feel behind their peers. By identifying these gaps, setting achievable goals, and providing consistent encouragement through the learning process, a tutor…

They can be the person they look up to whilst talking about their passions/what they want to do in the future etc. However one of the greatest things students can learn from their tutor could be from their own experience such that it will be more reliable and inspiring than any other theory I love working with kids, especially during my school…

Promote confidence in students to solve problems. Since I was once a student I understand it can be frustrating or not always worth the effort. I will be there to inspire the student why there is any value to what they are learning and cater for their needs the best I can. Breaking down harder concepts. I prefer making thing simple and allowing…

A tutor should set a good example for the student by punctual, respectful and approachable. A tutor should help the student set clear goals and monitor their progress. Above all, a tutor needs to believe in the student's capacity for growth, self-discipline and excellence. I think that I am very structured. I try my best to relate to students and…

I think a common misconception about a tutor's job is that their whole purpose is to get their tutee an A+. While this is obviously a wonderful side-effect of tutoring, the most important thing a tutor can do is to develop and improve a student's ability to problem-solve, learn, and work effectively to complete their academic goals. The difference…

A tutor must be patient and listen to how the student feels and explains their material. Without this we can't understand where the gaps are in the students knowledge OR whether they really do understand, but just in a different way. I have infinite patience, I can adjust my communication style, and I when faced with something unfamiliar I have…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and make sure to keep the student motivated while being honest with him/her. Be patient with them. All students are different but also everyone has the capacity to learn. It is up to the tutor to understand their students (how they think, their learning styles etc) and tailor their approach to meet their needs. Help the student build confidence. I find many students have the knowledge to solve problems but lack the confidence in themselves. Making the subject more exciting for the student is the best thing I believe a tutor can do for a student because with this strategy students would always be eager to learn new things and put more efforts towards it. In my experience, there are two really important things a tutor can provide for a student. A tutor's primary responsibility to their student is to strengthen their knowledge of a subject, diving deeper into topics they may have already studied or simply reinforcing concepts they are struggling with. While this is the predominant purpose of a…

She is fantastic! It was amazing to see the calming influence she had on Max as she patiently stepped him through learning maths. She is astute and quickly understood his capabilities and suggested to me simple steps for how we can focus on bringing him up to speed. I'm delighted.

Inside HamiltonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Bella focused on adding and subtracting mixed numbers and converting improper fractions, while also revisiting perimeter and area of rectangles to prepare for upcoming assessments.

In Year 9, Josh tackled simultaneous equations and the quadratic equation, using worked examples to solidify his algebraic reasoning.

For Year 10, Ava concentrated on applying the Sine and Cosine Rules in trigonometry and practiced solving geometry problems involving non-right-angled triangles.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8, a student often forgot to write all working for fraction and algebra questions; as noted, "forgets to write all working which in turn causes some error." This habit led to mistakes that could have been caught with clearer layout.

A Year 11 student struggled to use feedback from draft notes when revising an assignment—small errors persisted because changes weren't always implemented.

In senior maths, another hesitated on unfamiliar real-world problems, sticking to familiar question types rather than tackling new ones. After setbacks in exam practice, motivation dipped, slowing progress through revision tasks.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Hamilton recently noticed a Year 11 student who previously relied heavily on step-by-step guidance during algebra sessions now independently tackled quadratic equations, checking their work without prompting.

In Year 9 maths, another student who used to rush through long division is now pausing to check each answer and corrects mistakes before moving on, showing much more care with their working out.

Meanwhile, a primary school student who was hesitant with word problems last term has begun breaking them down methodically and can now explain their reasoning out loud while setting up the solutions for area and perimeter questions.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Hamilton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ascot State School.
