Inside Hawks NestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava practised division and multiplication facts through **timed quizzes** to build speed and accuracy.

For Year 9, Emily focused on **algebraic techniques**, tackling equations and expressions, while also reviewing the full year syllabus for exam preparation.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Daniel worked through financial maths concepts including **depreciation methods** and calculating dividend yields, using real-world examples to deepen understanding.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 financial maths, Liz was often "too reliant on putting numbers into a given formula," making it difficult to tackle worded or unfamiliar problems without guidance.

For Year 10 algebra, Danika avoided challenging questions and skipped those that "looked big," reflecting a lack of confidence and deeper understanding; she also hesitated to check her work after finishing.

In Year 8 maths, Lara's written working lacked order and clarity, which slowed progress when reviewing errors—her tutor noted that "writing down steps in a better order" would help her accuracy.

Moments of overthinking or defaulting to "I don't know" were common across grades, especially when new formats or mixed methods appeared.

Recent Achievements

During one Hawks Nest tutoring session, Danika began organising her questions before lessons and openly flagged areas of confusion—a big change from earlier sessions where she hesitated to admit struggles.

Another win came when Liz, also in high school, tackled challenging financial maths problems by herself during exam prep; she now shows every step clearly on paper and confidently explains her reasoning out loud instead of waiting for hints.

Meanwhile, Lara in Year 7 recently completed a practice test and scored 22 out of 25, using new study techniques and catching small mistakes herself during revision.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Very happy with Jason's tutelage.  Anna understands him and they work well together. Thanks for the connection!

Holly enjoyed her lessons with Jennifer as she was VERY patient and simplified the tasks, so that Holly could gain a better concept of the task at hand.

Thomas got 83% in each of his 2 Maths exams in the last week, (he went from 97 % to 50 % which made us think of tutoring) but for me its not the mark , it's the fact that he is happy and confident and really looking forward to his tutor time. It has done such a lot for his confidence Big thanks to Gabrielle!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Tea Gardens Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Tea Gardens Public School.
