I believe that it is important for tutors to be passionate about teaching. This way, it is easier for the student to gain interest in the subject, which ultimately leads to better performance from the student as they are more motivated to study and learn. I also think that it is important for tutors to create a comfortable learning environment for…

The most important things a tutor can do could be split into two parts. Academically, tutors are there to help the student to learn all the knowledge required for them to achieve better grades. Spiritually, tutors are there as mentors, which they need to encourage the student to achieve their full potential, because usually due to exam pressure,…

Besides grades, I would say that a tutor is also essentially teaching the student life skills such as responsibility and perseverance. I had this unmotivated student. He wouldn't complete the homework that I had given him and often fell asleep in class. I started to find out the reason behind his behavior and I used it to my advantage, Over…

Tutors are expected to bolster student grades however this is not their true purpose, A tutor should help to develop students to not only achieve greater marks but also to have a greater understanding of the field they are being tutored in. This should extend beyond the tutoring time as the student develops the skills required to support…

I believe support and encouragement are the most important elements that me as a tutor can help my students. Some students do not like to be pushed, and they need time for themselves as well, so supporting and encouraging them will direct them towards success. Some other students may experience difficulties in study (do not get a good result), so…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is provide a personal learning experience understanding their strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, I believe it is important to provide a human connection, and be consistent such that these young learners believe their tutors really want the best for them. I think an essential thing a tutor can do for their student is be empathetic! Often, for teachers, its hard to understand what students are feeling, since school and lifestyle has changed from the time they were students to now (in a global pandemic). Therefore, being an tutor who displays empathy about understanding what its like being a student…

Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

I believe it is important to understand the student's weaknesses and strengths before starting to teach them. I have come across a common problem with students, which is that they often jump straight into trying to solve a problem without fully understanding the theory/basics first. Hence, I try to first help them understand the basics then go…

Inspire students to understand the importance and broader concepts within mathematics. Also translate the mathematics to a way a student can understand - perhaps look at it more graphically, or by using a real world example - and by breaking down a complex problem into simple, easy to understand parts. The first and foremost thing a tutor should do is to create interest in the subject that is being taught. The reason is simple, when the student is interested in learning the subject, a teacher's job is a cakewalk. A teacher should make the student believe that subjects like maths are pretty easy and interesting to learn. This can be done by…

Modern curriculum is mostly based on a thought process that works for most students. But not for all, and school teachers don't usually have the capacity to take care of all the students individually. That's where a tutor can help. Everybody thinks about and understand scientific ideas and theories in their own, personal way. A tutor can lead the…

I think that a tutor should be approachable - the student shouldn't be afraid to say that they don't understand something. After all, the tutor is there to help the student through any new concepts and ensure that they are taught in an easy to understand way. The tutor should be able to adapt to the student's most effective learning techiques i.e.…

Inside HawthorndeneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jamie focused on multiplication and division strategies, also practising worded problem solving using real-life money scenarios.

In Year 8, Sam worked through trigonometric equations and explored circular geometry concepts, using diagrams to visualise angle relationships within a circle.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Chloe reviewed applications of integration in calculus and tackled magnetic induction problems relevant to senior physics coursework.

Recent Challenges

Several senior students, such as those in Year 11 and 12 Physics and Methods, had not completed enough independent revision between sessions—one tutor observed, "Hadn't done much revision between our last two sessions so needs to get plenty done before his two tests."

In a recent proof-writing task for Year 10 Maths, missing the first steps led to confusion about which equations to use.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled to remember how she solved time conversion problems from one week to the next; retention faltered without consistent practice. This left her unsure during homework and slower when new questions appeared.

Recent Achievements

One Hawthorndene tutor noticed a Year 9 student who had previously hesitated to ask for help now openly explaining their approach to tricky maths problems, showing new willingness to talk through their thinking.

In Year 11 physics, a student made excellent progress with magnetic induction—after struggling last term, he's now able to explain core concepts without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who once guessed at time questions is now taking her time to check which operation is needed before answering, and finished her last session by correctly solving all time problems on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hawthorndene Primary School.
