The most important things a tutor can do for a student are clarify difficult concepts, build confidence, and encourage independent thinking. A tutor should not just provide answers but help students develop a deeper understanding of the subject by guiding them through problems and encouraging critical thinking. Equally important is creating a…

I believe a tutor should possess excellent organisational, communication skills and good subject knowledge and Curriculum knowledge. It is important to understand the difficulty students go through in learning a particular subject. As a tutor we need to be patient. Above all, its the impact on children; we could be the reason a student develops a…

I think it is important for a tutor to not only further the knowledge and skills of a student but also help the student develop confidence in their abilities and make the relevant subject enjoyable. As someone who has worked individually throughout high school, I have developed efficient and valuable learning techniques that can only come with…

I think the ability to listen to the needs of each student to tailor your methods to them is vital in maximising their success. In the same vein, I think it is important to provide students with learning strategies that they can approach problems with in the future, to help build their toolbox, rather than approaching each new assignment or…

The important thing is to develop the student's ability to independently study. It is like that proverb 'Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.' There are going to be times where the student will find themselves in a position with an urgent question regarding their assignment which is…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to inspire their curiosity and desire for learning because it is their desire that will ultimately drive them to succeed. I think my strength as a tutor is my personality. I'm very kind, patient, and funny. I always find a way to make learning more…

I think being able to answer all their inquires and helping them grow in the subject is a very important part of being a tutor. I also think being patient is an essential trait to have as at times you may need to think of different ways to explain concepts for students to be able to grasp it I think I’m very good at explaining things to students…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their students is to foster a supportive and encouraging learning environment. This involves not only teaching the material but also building the student’s confidence in their own abilities. A tutor should inspire curiosity and provide the tools for students to become independent learners, so they feel…

This means providing personalised support and encouraging critical thinking to allow for subject understandng to occur. As more understanding is built, students confidence grows as well. Being patient is the single most important thing a tutor can do his/her students. In my experience, I reaped the biggest rewards of being patient with the most struggling students of a cohort in terms of learning outcomes. In relative terms, return on patience with students outstrips that on all other aspects of tutor effort in my personal…

Help them and understand them. For me is so important to get to know my students so I can help them which the topics that they don’t like or are not good at it. But I also like to know what they like and what are they passionate about so I can find they way to teach them better by using those things. I am a really emphatic person. I love to work…

Inside HawthorndeneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jamie focused on multiplication and division strategies, also practising worded problem solving using real-life money scenarios.

In Year 8, Sam worked through trigonometric equations and explored circular geometry concepts, using diagrams to visualise angle relationships within a circle.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Chloe reviewed applications of integration in calculus and tackled magnetic induction problems relevant to senior physics coursework.

Recent Challenges

Several senior students, such as those in Year 11 and 12 Physics and Methods, had not completed enough independent revision between sessions—one tutor observed, "Hadn't done much revision between our last two sessions so needs to get plenty done before his two tests."

In a recent proof-writing task for Year 10 Maths, missing the first steps led to confusion about which equations to use.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled to remember how she solved time conversion problems from one week to the next; retention faltered without consistent practice. This left her unsure during homework and slower when new questions appeared.

Recent Achievements

One Hawthorndene tutor noticed a Year 9 student who had previously hesitated to ask for help now openly explaining their approach to tricky maths problems, showing new willingness to talk through their thinking.

In Year 11 physics, a student made excellent progress with magnetic induction—after struggling last term, he's now able to explain core concepts without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who once guessed at time questions is now taking her time to check which operation is needed before answering, and finished her last session by correctly solving all time problems on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hawthorndene Primary School.
