The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to give them the skills to solve unfamiliar problems that they have not learned a method of solving, and require them to devise their own unique approach to the problem. My biggest strengths as a tutor are that I have a very patient approach to teaching and that I am able to clearly and…

A tutor needs to always be supportive. A student needs a tutor because (s)he wants help. Sometimes not getting a good result can be frustrating for them. A tutor needs to make sure that the students are motivated to improve. I'm good at understanding why the students are stuck, whether it is not knowing how to apply a formula or weak algebraic…

I believe that it is important for tutors to be passionate about teaching. This way, it is easier for the student to gain interest in the subject, which ultimately leads to better performance from the student as they are more motivated to study and learn. I also think that it is important for tutors to create a comfortable learning environment for…

I think it's important for tutors to make sure students understand the concepts, both old and new. A deep understanding in core old concepts is essential in learning new ideas. Having spent 4+ years working at Kumon Education Centre, I have developed various skills in helping students of all ages learn and improve their confidence at school. I…

The most important things a tutor can do could be split into two parts. Academically, tutors are there to help the student to learn all the knowledge required for them to achieve better grades. Spiritually, tutors are there as mentors, which they need to encourage the student to achieve their full potential, because usually due to exam pressure,…

Tutors are expected to bolster student grades however this is not their true purpose, A tutor should help to develop students to not only achieve greater marks but also to have a greater understanding of the field they are being tutored in. This should extend beyond the tutoring time as the student develops the skills required to support…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is provide a personal learning experience understanding their strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, I believe it is important to provide a human connection, and be consistent such that these young learners believe their tutors really want the best for them. Know your stuff. Always. As simple as it might sound, really bringing your students a reliable foundation of knowledge on the subject is always crucial. It doesn't mean that you ALWAYS have to know your stuff though, we are human, and human can sometimes afford not to know it all. This is when I would go on, do my research, and make sure the next…

While I think it's important to assist students from an academic standpoint, I also think it's important for tutors to help students develop a sense of purpose in their studies. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is prepare them for the unexpected. While it's important that the student can understand and solve general problems they may be presented with, the only way to achieve an A grade is to go above and beyond what is expected of them. This can only be achieved if the student is…

Inspire students to understand the importance and broader concepts within mathematics. The first and foremost thing a tutor should do is to create interest in the subject that is being taught. The reason is simple, when the student is interested in learning the subject, a teacher's job is a cakewalk. A teacher should make the student believe that subjects like maths are pretty easy and interesting to learn. This can be done by…

Inside HawthorndeneTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jamie focused on multiplication and division strategies, also practising worded problem solving using real-life money scenarios.

In Year 8, Sam worked through trigonometric equations and explored circular geometry concepts, using diagrams to visualise angle relationships within a circle.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Chloe reviewed applications of integration in calculus and tackled magnetic induction problems relevant to senior physics coursework.

Recent Challenges

Several senior students, such as those in Year 11 and 12 Physics and Methods, had not completed enough independent revision between sessions—one tutor observed, "Hadn't done much revision between our last two sessions so needs to get plenty done before his two tests."

In a recent proof-writing task for Year 10 Maths, missing the first steps led to confusion about which equations to use.

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student struggled to remember how she solved time conversion problems from one week to the next; retention faltered without consistent practice. This left her unsure during homework and slower when new questions appeared.

Recent Achievements

One Hawthorndene tutor noticed a Year 9 student who had previously hesitated to ask for help now openly explaining their approach to tricky maths problems, showing new willingness to talk through their thinking.

In Year 11 physics, a student made excellent progress with magnetic induction—after struggling last term, he's now able to explain core concepts without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 learner who once guessed at time questions is now taking her time to check which operation is needed before answering, and finished her last session by correctly solving all time problems on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Blackwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Hawthorndene Primary School.
