I believe the most important thing is understanding a student, and to be in their shoes when tutoring them. I believe that it allows tutors to really gauge students into learning more efficiently. My strengths as a tutor is that I believe I can teach well. I can make problems easy for those I am tutoring and will be able to guide a student to the…

Communication and consistency, developing the understanding of how an individual can best learn. I have continuously studied mathematics since high school in 2020 so the maths required for tutoring at this level are routine to me. I have always enjoyed talking to people especially at my current job serving customers, and helping my friends with…

A tutor job is to reinforce the knowledge that student learned from class. Moreover, tutor should help student to develop critical thinking skill not only for exams but also for future education. Finally, I believe tutor should prepare student to handle any challenging exam to achieve the best results as possible. I am very paitient and easy…

Give time to the student. Clear doubts if any in their mind. I believe in hierarchical learning of a concept. First let the students solve the easy to medium difficulty questions confidently and then go on to the tougher ones. By breaking the tougher questions into small easier parts, student can understand it better First and…

I think the most important thing for a tutor is to understand the type of support needed. Some students require more explanation whereas other students prefer to work with problems to understand what and how they should apply themselves and what they have learnt. This also may change for different topics with the same student; it's about trying…

A tutor must be adaptable and proactive. They must observe a student's progress and deduce what method they learn best and adjust their teaching accordingly. Each student is different and has different capacities of learning and a good teacher must identify them for each student and make the best out of their unique potential. I can teach the…

Having the patience and being a good listener. Having the two is what I believe where you can start building a better relationship with the student. By listening carefully to the student and also being patient with them (since people learns at different speed and different methods). From there, I can understand students in their area of weakness…

Firstly, it's essential to ensure a student's well-being. Mental and emotional health significantly impact performance. So, I prioritize creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable and are in the right mindset to excel. Secondly, understanding the content is at the core of effective tutoring. The most important things a tutor can do for a student is create a judgement free zone. We all know the feeling when we have asked someone for help and despite not understanding their clarification say that we do and that everything is fine. A judgement free zone is a space where students will ask questions until they are certain that they…

Foremost, a tutor should help their student to identify and reach their goals. Knowing what is important to the student and incorporating that into the metrics for success will help them feel like they are making progress. And secondly, tutors should help the student to form good habits; as motivation can only take one so far, incorporating a good…

I am opinion I reckon the most important is for the student to know their true passion in knowledge. Many of us are forced to be good at something and spend thousands of hours of hard work. Everyone could achieve a reasonably high score if they had spent the effort in it, given they were not demotivated during the process. I believe it is most…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to offer help which is tailored to the student's specific needs. This is not usually done in classes as teachers have a large number of students and cannot always pitch their lessons at the right level for everybody. A tutor,on the other hand, who works with a small group of students, can…

Not only teaching a subject, but making they more confident and independent. Inside HeathertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Zara focused on solving linear equations with brackets and pronumerals on both sides, as well as using the elimination method for simultaneous equations.

In Year 9, Sam worked through applications of Pythagoras' theorem in real-world scenarios and learned how to find unknown side lengths in trigonometry by rearranging formulas.

Meanwhile, Year 6 student Ethan practised adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions—including negatives—and used stem-and-leaf plots to organise data visually.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly relied on written notes rather than practicing applying concepts to new types of probability and algebra questions, leading to hesitation when unfamiliar wording appeared.

In Year 10, a student used their cheat sheet but struggled to identify which formulas or diagrams matched the question during open-note assessments; as noted, "she needs to practice more on which information/diagrams relates to the questions."

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student avoided showing full working out in ratio simplification tasks—skipping lines meant errors went unnoticed until answers were checked. This pattern left confusion during revision and increased stress before tests.

Recent Achievements

A Heatherton tutor recently noticed a big shift in a Year 10 student who used to wait for hints, but now works through tricky algebra questions step by step before asking for help.

In another session, a Year 7 student who often rushed and guessed at maths problems started taking time to read each question carefully and checked her answers on her own.

Meanwhile, in Year 12 English, one student who struggled with essay planning has begun outlining her arguments independently before writing—she finished last lesson's outline without any prompts from the tutor.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Clarinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christway College.
