The most important thing a tutor can do is not only to support a student but to make them feel as though they have accomplished what they set out to achieve, even if it is a small goal, as long as it gets fulfilled. I believe that I can personalise the amount of help I provide to a student, no matter their abilities. This will allow me to ensure…

An ability to communicate a genuine passion for the subject. Patience and being calm in the delivery of the content. I think reassurance that there is often a feeling of uncertainty through the learning process and that this is perfectly ok and a sign that learning is happening. You know, the most crucial things a tutor can do for a student boil down to creating a chill and comfy learning vibe. It's like making them feel they can ask anything without hesitation. Then comes the personalized magic – tailoring stuff to their style. And let's not forget the confidence boost – helping them see they've got this! It's all…

I think that a tutor should be able to meet the individual needs of a student and present the content in an easily understandable format for them especially in the field of mathematics where there are often multiple pathways to achieving an answer. To inspire a student to be curious and develop a love of learning, as people are not often motivated to improve in areas in which they lack passion. But can I just say how lovely she is and in particular Aidan is feeling very comfortable with her to the point he's happy to have her come during the school holidays!! He's normally a little reserved and can sometimes take a while to warm up but they seem to have clicked really well and he doesn't appear intimidated like he can do at times.

Inside HeidelbergTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alice focused on simplifying fractions and converting between improper and mixed numbers, along with practice in representing fractions on a number line.

Year 10 student Liam worked through chemistry concepts including covalent, ionic, and hydrogen bonds, as well as identifying polar versus non-polar bonds using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ava reviewed biology topics by summarising key points for an upcoming SAC and tackling challenging practice questions related to photosynthesis and respiration.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 Maths, a student attempted to solve equations mentally without showing each step—"she tries to complete problems in one go rather than show each step taken"—which led to confusion and hidden errors, especially during division tasks.

Homework was only partially submitted and often lacked clear working, making it hard to identify where understanding broke down.

In Year 11 Chemistry, another student relied on lists but struggled to distinguish between similar concepts because they avoided creating detailed comparison guides.

During English sessions at the primary level, one student's tendency to leave sentences incomplete resulted in vague explanations that missed key details when answering comprehension questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Heidelberg recently noticed Mitch, a Year 10 student, now quickly spots alliteration and metaphors on his own—something he hesitated with before—so they were able to dive deeper into poem analysis together.

In chemistry, an older student has started differentiating between polar and nonpolar molecules independently after struggling to explain the concept last term.

Meanwhile, Elena in Year 4 tackled her trickiest times tables drill yet; she managed to call out factors that used to trip her up and finished the sheet without needing reminders or hints from her tutor.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Jessica has been great, she has helped Ben quite a bit already and identified problems and strengths.  She is punctual and diligent.

My son, is doing quite well at the moment (year 9). His tutor was fantastic and got him up to a level where he finally 'got it'.

Liam is now achieving an A for Maths - (previously getting a D!!!) Calvin is a delightful member of your team and he related really well with Liam.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Rosanna Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St John's School.
