Be prepared for a lesson, be interested, explain things properly and clearly, make sure they actually understand and aren't just saying 'yes', allowing them to work through some tasks themselves. I think I am good at explaining and communicating. I am also quite down to earth, so I think that it is easy to ask me any questions.…

Understanding the weak points and listening to their problems helps establish trust between the tutor and the student. This makes a tutor approachable. A tutor should never make their students feel that any question is dumb. Imparting the idea that all questions are good questions and students should never fear while asking anything is one of the…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to bring out the confidence in them. The confidence will allow them to keep trying and never give up. The other most important thing a tutor can provide the student with is understanding. The understanding of the student's strengths and areas of improvement. As a tutor, my strength…

I believe a tutor should be a role model for the students and encourage him/her on their academic journey. I have found that many times students don't have proper guidance in regards to academics, hence they develop this stigma that they are not smart enough. As a tutor my role is to encourage the students to not only do better in school but also…

A tutor is someone who can provide guidance and support for their student. While a tutor can be someone who can just teach content that the student doesn't understand I believe being a good tutor is more than just that. It is essential to make the student enjoys what they are learning so when they can have greater motivation to understand new…

The most important thing for me is to be able to make a student understand a topic throughly by going over it patiently not just make him/ her rope-learn it. I am an enthusiastic individual with a great amount of passion for teaching. I am a patient individual who will repeat a topic over and over again until the student understand it…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is quickly understand their strengths and weaknesses on a topic, and be able to use that to work on and hopefully eliminate any weaknesses. It is also very important for a tutor to make sure they are not giving a lecture, as the student will gain more from the session if they are actively…

Listening. I think the best thing a tutor/mentor can do is listen to their students to find out which subjects/areas that need to be focused on. Anyone can teach the syllabus but a great tutor will produce a study plan suited to each individual student which will help bring best out of them. studying at RMIT has helped further broaden my Math and…

According to me, a tutor can help his student improve and be a stepping stone in achieving his goals . A tutor can make his student be a better person , and can inculcate the genuine love of learning and knowledge and showing others what it looks like to be passionate about his future. Sharing knowledge with the students is the main thing but…

The most important thing a tutor can do is not only to support a student but to make them feel as though they have accomplished what they set out to achieve, even if it is a small goal, as long as it gets fulfilled. I believe that I can personalise the amount of help I provide to a student, no matter their abilities. This will allow me to ensure…

An ability to communicate a genuine passion for the subject. Patience and being calm in the delivery of the content. I think reassurance that there is often a feeling of uncertainty through the learning process and that this is perfectly ok and a sign that learning is happening. Being structured in the delivery of the content so that there can…

You know, the most crucial things a tutor can do for a student boil down to creating a chill and comfy learning vibe. It's like making them feel they can ask anything without hesitation. Then comes the personalized magic – tailoring stuff to their style. And let's not forget the confidence boost – helping them see they've got this! It's all…

The tutor needs to make sure that all the questions of the student are answered really well. Most importantly, the tutor needs to be a role model for the student. I believe tutors should always believe in their student and never give up. They will aim to instil a positive growth mindset in their students. To inspire a student to be curious and develop a love of learning, as people are not often motivated to improve in areas in which they lack passion. But can I just say how lovely she is and in particular Aidan is feeling very comfortable with her to the point he's happy to have her come during the school holidays!! He's normally a little reserved and can sometimes take a while to warm up but they seem to have clicked really well and he doesn't appear intimidated like he can do at times.

Inside HeidelbergTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Alice focused on simplifying fractions and converting between improper and mixed numbers, along with practice in representing fractions on a number line.

Year 10 student Liam worked through chemistry concepts including covalent, ionic, and hydrogen bonds, as well as identifying polar versus non-polar bonds using diagrams.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ava reviewed biology topics by summarising key points for an upcoming SAC and tackling challenging practice questions related to photosynthesis and respiration.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 Maths, a student attempted to solve equations mentally without showing each step—"she tries to complete problems in one go rather than show each step taken"—which led to confusion and hidden errors, especially during division tasks.

Homework was only partially submitted and often lacked clear working, making it hard to identify where understanding broke down.

In Year 11 Chemistry, another student relied on lists but struggled to distinguish between similar concepts because they avoided creating detailed comparison guides.

During English sessions at the primary level, one student's tendency to leave sentences incomplete resulted in vague explanations that missed key details when answering comprehension questions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Heidelberg recently noticed Mitch, a Year 10 student, now quickly spots alliteration and metaphors on his own—something he hesitated with before—so they were able to dive deeper into poem analysis together.

In chemistry, an older student has started differentiating between polar and nonpolar molecules independently after struggling to explain the concept last term.

Meanwhile, Elena in Year 4 tackled her trickiest times tables drill yet; she managed to call out factors that used to trip her up and finished the sheet without needing reminders or hints from her tutor.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are so happy and impressed with Pariese. She has already made a great rapport with Charlie, which was our initial concern. She is both both professional and engaging with an obvious passion for maths. She has given us feedback relating to Charlie's learning style and is active in finding strategies to suit him. The fact that he looks forward to his lesson, is a testament in itself. She is always punctual and happy to have a brief at the end of each session. I have spoken to Pariese about Charlie needing long term tutoring, to which she agreed.

Everything seems to be progressing well, Trai is asking questions which is good, he is quite happy to have the lessons I know its early days so we will wait and see

Everything is going well and Nayte likes Thilacsan. He has given Nayte some problems to work out during the week which he is doing.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Rosanna Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St John's School.
